By the way, the Munich attacker was barred from buying firearms under Austrian gun control laws but profitted from a rule where non-semi automatic rifles can be bought right at the store without a background check, the buyer merely being required to submit their purchase to the national gun registry within six weeks. As a gun owner, the only thing more annoying to me than gun control laws are gun control laws which cannot even serve their intended purpose. I mean, what the hell? If the aim is to prevent criminal elements or the mentally unstable from purchasing a firearm, how on earth can you let them buy one and hope they'll just surrender it if found ineligible to own guns?
It also goes to show that politicians have no idea what they're talking about. That dude was carrying a G31 chambered in 7.5 × 55 mm with a six-round magazine. A skilled shooter can do a lot of harm with a gun like that. Doesn't have to be semiautomatic to be dangerous. Case in point, the body armour worn by Bavarian police would've offered no protection against that kind of firepower. That's almost 700 J more than what a 7.62 × 39 mm packs, the reference calibre for terrorist threats.
