It’s unlikely I’ll find any sources in English about it, but in short:

A number of wannabe jihadists went on trial in Paris last week. Their cunning plan was to exterminate a whole quiet, retired village in Britanny in the most gruesome way in 2020 before they were fortunately caught.

Of course any of which based and inspired by IS and Syria “prime years”.

Whackos wanted to slit throats, behead and shoot / mass kill overnight.

That's a concept I've always been worried about: attacks far off the beaten tracks, in bumfuck nowhere rather than some well-guarded capital city. Difficult to prevent and capable of bringing society to the brink. I mean, terrorism isn't exactly foreign to us; before ISIS we'd seen ETA, Brigate Rosse and PLO rear their ugly heads. We've long since come to expect something might happen in our metropolises. But a terrorist attack on a rural village in the middle of nowhere? That's truly beyond imagination. One needs look no further than America: Thirty murders in Chicago is a regular Tuesday; a three-killed-school shooting in some rural backwater shakes the nation.

Exactly right. We as French were already close enough to the brink of society after the Bataclan and Nice truck attacks.

Some observers even stated that “one more of the likes and we’re plunging to civil war”.

Fortunately we haven’t.

At any rate, that’s something really twisted to go kill random families and civilians at night leaving an Oradour sur glane scenario since as you point out it’d take a bit before the heavily armed police gets there.
