I think it's the lack of healthy patriotism and pride.
I'm not saying you need to start every school day with raising of the flag, like in communist countries. But on national day it should be done, and maybe teach some of the nations achievements in history class etc.

We’ve been down that road a lot in the past in these forums, but I was once rabidly against military conscription, let’s see some of the sanest countries in Europe amongst which Switzerland… not immune to issues but to gather for a year young men from all walks of life, religion, ethnicity and background wasn’t that bad.

For me it's mainly a practical solution if we have another WW.
But I also like that we citizens make up the army so there is no separate class of people solely responsible for our own defense.
