Interesting. Do they need 3 engines to get performance?

Or is the third engine a scramjet?

The Western nations develop variable cycle engines atm.

Gives 30% more range. If you carry three engines you also carry lots of dead weight with you.

Or is it a bomber?

Yes, there's been some speculation this is a F/B , the third engine is a scramjet installed on the back of aircraft in an inefficient way. If true the scramjet is going to take a lot of internal space that limit the weapon bay.
But the speed and altitude gains will increase the effective range and lethalness of AAM, ASM , glide bombs. Any non-stealth 4.5 gen+ fighters stand no chance in front of this "Bomber". Patriot SAMs cannot intercept this aircraft, their best hope is to shoot down the arrow, not kill the archer. SM-6's intercept window will be reduced significantly too.

Opening weapons bays at hypersonic speeds and release ordnance might be a bit tricky though.

Lets see what they plan here.

Travelling st hypersonic speeds also produces an enormous heat signature.

And all the coatings must withstand that too.

I guess they have to use three engines for an other reason.
