Which Americans are you talking about? The descendant of those hillbillies that helped get rid of the King of England?

Clue: beside the language and even then, America isn’t yours anymore. They even drive on the right side of the road.
Wrong side of the road (Y)

930 New Covid Infections, Almost 100 Deaths In The Past 24hrs. Infection Rate Down To 2.7%

It’s a global trend on the European continent, from Romania to France and of course the UK, the number of daily cases, people in ICU and deaths have for the past week quite drastically decreased. Less than 200 dead recorded in France for the past 24 hours whereas we were at about 400 or more two weeks ago.

About f***ing time too, as Belgium and France are or will reopen this week and the next one, the terrace of restaurants and bars only for now and the cinemas, museums will get their chance after a painful six months shutdown.

It’s good, but of course still a disaster both in human lives and for the economy. If the worst of the pandemic thanks to the vaccination rollout is behind us, I’m not that optimistic about unemployment and social or civil unrest to come.

it is getting better, but here they prepare us for next winter, facemasks and working from home, have been floated, so far....

The Indian variant is quite worrying but last I heard was that Pfizer was efficient against it. Can’t speak for AZ, Moderna or J&J.

Yes, same here. Many virologists and scientists are warning us about third/fourth/fifth “wave” for next autumn and winter, I take it seriously but enough is enough. The lockdowns are controversial too and not every scientist and docs find this solution so efficient, would have been worse without any lockdown probably but for nearly a year...?

Could have, would have, should have I know. Almost every govts in Europe have been heavily criticized by their opposition or population, often rightly so. In the end thanks China for the cover up and the first few months of late 2019 and early 2020 that would have made a major difference had we been warned soon enough.

I hope we have the time now, to make better plans, isolation with support for the very weak and elderly, masks in crowds etc, and presumably more vaccines.

WHO report finds multiple faults in initial COVID response.

Doesn't appear to acknowledge that the WHO's own confusing messaging at the beginning didn't help matters. Doesn't appear to acknowledge that the WHO was far more concerned about things like smoking and drinking over disease.

Recommends that the WHO be rewarded for this poor performance with more money and more powers.

Here in Germany, a report warned as early as 2012 that the country was wholly unprepared to deal with a pandemic. The authors even predicted the current situation insofar as they anticipated a virus-borne respiratory disease to be the most likely cause of a future pandemic. Parliament debated the findings and did – nothing. I'm not even particularly angry nor surprised, though.

If some member of parliament had moved to stockpile one billion face masks "just in case", they'd have been laughed out of the assembly room. The media would've grilled them for "fear-mongering", and the populace would've accused them of wasting their hard-earned taxes. Our species is doomed to learn a lesson the hard way.

We don't like to be reminded of our mortality, and we don't like to prepare for uncomfortable eventualities. Even off the top of your head, you'll find no shortage of great losses of life by way of catastrophe or violence that could've easily been prevented … but only in their wake did we get our act together. If we did get our act together, that is.

What's ultimately made this whole situation so much worse is the behaviour of the individual citizens, and I don't think they paid nearly as much attention to the WHO as they did do to the news. I don't mean to exonerate the WHO; clearly, they've made a huge cock-up. But in my books, the media are the single-most noteworthy contributor to the pandemic's escalation.

Their sensationalist coverage of previous epidemics like Avian Flu – treated as minor health scares by serious experts –, conditioned the populace to underestimate future hazards since there was so little to show for all the drama. And their initial focus on anti-Asian racism prompted many (including myself) to disregard the threat; after all, how could a hate crime be more newsworthy than an allegedly dangerous disease?

I'd argue the change in tune on the right really reflects the negative impact of their handling of the emergent situation. After all, right-wing politicians like Trump initially spearheaded the toughest response to the spreading pandemic. Only when the media's response showed them that votes were to be had in downplaying the threat, did they pull a turncoat.

The 24-square-mile (61-square-kilometre) enclave, with a population of 34,000, first received a batch of Sputnik in February and has so far immunized 25,000 people, officials said on a briefing on Wednesday, mostly with the Russian vaccine.

With no coronavirus patients currently in hospital, San Marino decided it was capable of launching a campaign inviting tourists to get vaccinated with Sputnik V, tourism minister Federico Pedini Amati said on the briefing.
"The vaccination tourism campaign will start on 17 May and will concern foreign, non-Italian citizens," the minister said.

Got my second jab next Wednesday - a lot sooner than I expected - not like it's going to change my plans for this year, but it will be good to get it out of the way
