He may pull through, but probably not without lasting damage. The German edition of Euronews has an update that writes he is being ventilated, cannot speak and may lose an eye. Witnesses reported that Rushdie was beaten or stabbed 15 times.

According to the NY State Police, the perpetrator most likely acted on his own. The motive is not yet clear but the FBI is now cooperating with the local Sheriff and NYSP.

Who was responsible for providing protection?

In the Netherlands a political refugee/activist of this magnitude would have a 24/7 protection detail from a specialized department and for larger public events reinforced with uniformed police officers with specific training. There would also be a continous risk assessment supported by intelligence agencies.

But do remember the early to late 1990s, Salman Rushdie was hiding under UK police protection, riots erupted in “multicultural areas” of England and he was essentially bunkering down for many years.

I agree that there has to be a scrutiny about the lack thereof of police protection around him. No one should have let his eyes off him especially during a public event.

It’s also about Salman himself though, for the last interviews he has given, he had enough of being the “man tracked down by the fatwa”, and the Satanic verses considering he’s also written numerous other books.

Good news is that Salman will survive this attack, bad news is he still could probably lose an eye, and the multiple wounds he’s suffered (including the liver) could mean a long haul in the hospital for heavy medical care.

Happy for him he survives this, from now on, police protection wherever he’s at should be enforced. He should be free to speak wherever he please, which is the best way to give any of his opponents starting with the Ayatollah and his minions the finger.
