I am a little bit jealous.
I still remember the days of rocking up to a mates house and finding rifles just sitting in the corner of the lounge room. Times change. Interestingly it was the Australian conservatives (the liberal party) that heavily restricted firearm ownership. Tobe fair it was the Port Arthur massacre that was the trigger for the crackdown.
There had already been a lot of massacres perpetrated by lone gunmen. Port Arthur was the tipping point. Martin Bryant used an AR-15 purchased via a classifieds ad. Then went on a rampage that killed 35 people.

Prior to Port Arthur mass shooting murders by a lone heavily armed gunman in Australia included Hoddle street, Queen street, the Onenpelli shootings, the Surry Hills shootings, Strathfield massacre etc. Although I feel like the article I quoted is disingenuous given the mass shooting attack at Monash university occurred in 2002.
