Politics Gun laws and news around the world

In a series of tweets, Obama expressed both sadness and outrage. He put blame squarely on Republican lawmakers and the National Rifle Association, arguing that “our country is paralyzed — not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might prevent these tragedies.”

...His party holds the White house, Senate and the House?

It is strange to me, as there are countries with similar access to the firearms as the USA, but there were no mass shootings or school shootings in Switzerland, Finland or Andora.
The guns are only "the boy to beat", the reason is different - lack of sense of security? One serious illness makes you a victim of healthcare system...

I'm not sure there are no background checks in the countries you mention.

I think 18 is a little young to own a gun. Don' t you have to be 21 to buy a beer in Texas?

We're required to get a background check here in the US with each purchase of any type of firearm. Additionally, to buy a pistol, a person must be at least 21, and depending on the state, 21 to buy self loading, i.e. semi-automatic weapons. In some states, such as the one that I live in, a person has to go to the sheriff to get a permit to purchase a pistol, a process that can take months.

Somehow the people in a lot of these shootings are known to the police and have had enough problems to prevent a firearms purchase if the existing laws had been applied. Of course, CNN never wants to point out that little detail.

Apparently Abott had softened age rules for carrying firearms.

I am all for gun ownership but if you are too young to buy a beer I cannot understand you are allowed to have a gun.

I also do not understand how a governor can openly tweet about encouraging people to buy more guns. Does he get a commission? Is'nt enforcing the right to bear arms enough?

The gunman in the Texas school rampage was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent who rushed to the scene without waiting for backup, a law enforcement official says. The agent was wounded but was able to walk out of the school.

Death toll is now 21.

“Termination will be sought” for the dispatcher at a disciplinary hearing later this month, said Peter Anderson, spokesperson for the executive of Erie County, in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Stronger background checks has become the go-to response after a spree-shooting, but it likely wouldn’t have kept the killers at Sandy Hook, Parkland, Buffalo or Texas (all under 21 yrs old) from legally possessing a semi-auto assault rifle.

Given the history of these shootings it might be time to raise the age to 21. I remember what its like to be 18, its still a chaotic time in most peoples lives. A lot of people are still struggling with their identity, their place in the world, hormones are still going on, and in this society people seem to remain mentally and emotionally much younger for a longer period of time. There is also obviously a mental health issue in the US and I dont know enough on that to comment, however obviously that is the root of the problem.

As was mentioned earlier, there are countries where firearm ownership is also quite open where you don't have nutcases (because this kid was insane) going on firing on everyone.

I don' t pretend to have an answer but I also don't see why there should be more mential cases in the USA than elsewhere. Maybe there is too much glorification of gun ownership. Gun ownership is good, gun ownership helps you protect your home and family, it should be protected. But when it comes to having guns so that you can be a badass, a limit has been breached and I think that in the USA there is a lot of that. So weaker minds completely lose it.

And politicans should defend gun ownership without becoming sale representatives for gun makers.

Biden’s speech was emotional post this tragedy. Just like Obama after Sandy Hook. Crocodile tears? I hope not.

Surfpunk aptly mentioned about the mental health issues the US suffer, this mass shooter here obviously had something going on in his mind, especially after shooting his grandma and the aftermath. He was also picked on and harassed on social medias. Typical.

Unfortunately I see no end in sights with mass shootings in America. Blame it on Republicans, the NRA or whatever else it’s not going to change even if the Dems attempt some gun grabbing operation.

It’s always the same thing in the medias: the 2A is outdated and obsolete, should be repealed yadayadayada.

Train and arm willing teachers. Eliminate "gun free zones" and make schools a very hard target. The best I can do right now is have a can of wasp spray on my desk and a plate carrier handy. I also work to develop good relationships with students and listen closely for signs of trouble within and between students. We regularly practice lockdown drills and have a resource officer on campus almost every day. Doors are also locked with magnetic key card access that is limited. Teaching students to value life is also important. The key problem is evil and that is not going away.

the mental issues in this country have absolutely nothing to do with being "caused by guns".

Does EVERYTHING have to be 21?

Driving a car, motorcycle, getting married, volunteering for the Army or just having to register for Selective Service?

I'm open to the idea, but there are SO many different scenarios.

21 for everything: Choosing medical treatments, getting an abortion, changing one's gender.....

Right, I also think that one doesn’t need to be a doctor to say that the drugs epidemic is one of the main reason for the mental issues, in the US and anywhere else.

It’s documented enough. It’s not new. I’d feel more confident and safe at the range with a number of CCW citizens than with a bunch of crackheads armed with a scissor.

Not teaching any morals, thou shalt not steal and murder and such. Replaced with race guilt and gender pronouns... yes I over simplify.
