Politics Gun laws and news around the world

What’s interesting about this requirement is that Finland got rid of this annoyance fairly recently. The logic IIRC is too much time, too subjective, and largely ineffective.

They still do the interview though.

They got rid of the test, because it didn't produce any tangible results.

it is effective in that we dont have mass shootings by random individuals.... as for stopping criminals well no law will ever do that.

You can't seriously think that it's because of some questionnaire by the police.

Also, it's pretty difficult to get a firearm anyway. With pistols requirement is two years of active training.

Dear SSANZ members,

Before I head off to Wellington here are a couple of interesting items for you.

While the Police are unwilling to consult with licensed firearm owners over the proposed new Arms Act changes they are quite willing to sit down and talk to the leaders of major Criminal Gangs in an effort to get them to hand in their illegal guns.

All I can say is there are more than a few nations with liberal gun laws that don’t have this requirement and very rarely have mass shootings despite having gun cultures.

With the gun control debate rekindled in Germany, I've been pondering these questions a lot lately.

We certainly do not suffer a want of theories: Is America's culture to blame for the country's many amok killings – a culture that celebrates the gun-slinging man's man and his right to stand his ground?
Why then does China see so many amok killings? Could they be the pain inflicted by ideology's too rigid a corset?

And where's the missing link?

I now believe these mass killings are a product of Western culture. Their prevalence in America could be linked to the easy availability of firearms there, but the fact that America plays somewhat of a forerunner role for Western culture is probably a bigger factor. Besides, it seems to me we have to pay attention to a spreading phenomenon which I put to you is another, unrecognised form of running amok: acts of unprovoked, senseless violence.

Just the other day, a Hamburg pensioner was almost murdered by teenagers after he'd asked them to turn the volume of their music down. Ordinary teenagers they were, without so much as a letter of admonition to their names.

Nothing of the sort would've happened two, three generations ago.

What's changed?

Narcissism has become a virtue, that's what's changed. And society has stopped teaching the virtue of resilience.

We live in a culture where boys are not allowed rough-and-tumble play anymore to "protect" them. Schools are not allowed to grade exams anymore so as not to hurt the students' feelings. "Safe spaces" in universities are a thing, and something as simple as the reiteration of scientific knowledge can be considered "hate speech".

Passing by an untold number of other examples, I say we live in a culture that produces members of society who're utterly unable to deal with life's challenges and obstacles. We live in a culture where something as mundane as the request tho lower the volume of one's music can be perceived as a mortal slight.

And the Chinese see the exact same grim story play out, albeit for a different reason: the one-child policy.

We only ever think of "tiger moms" and the terrible pressure of expectation to which Chinese children are exposed. But there's another side to this policy, and that is the Chinese call their children "little emperors". It's a pervasive phenomenon many Chinese parents get up to their ears in debt to fulfill their child's every wish. They're famously slaves to their offspring's every impulse. I say, their culture produces the same dangerous breed of narcissists that can't deal with rejection and failure.

The moral of the story is we don't do children a favour by shielding them from every imposition, from every challenge to their opinion. Instead, we render them unable to navigate the waters of the world the minute they enter rough sea.

It just occured to me: I need to learn to express my opinion in a less time-consuming fashion ? Sorry, guys.

Pretty much, this helicopter parenting has not just extended to just parents but to the government in general.

Everything with sharp corners must be padded like an asylum cell.

They still do the interview though.

They got rid of the test, because it didn't produce any tangible results.
With the shrink or with the police?

Its not the just tgr questions but the entire process.

Democrat Controlled Virginia ‘Working’ On Confiscating Guns From Law Abiding Citizens, Governor Says
During a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Northam “mentioned universal background checks, banning the sale of [semi-automatic firearms] and high-capacity magazines, restoring the law that limits purchases to one gun a month, and a red flag law that would empower a court to temporarily remove a gun from a person deemed to be a risk to himself or others,” The Washington Post reported.

The Republicans fvcked up in Virginia and now Governor Blackface is going to ram through Anti-Gun legislation in a state where 1/3 of the population has a gun.

Disgusting.
And get this, this is just the 'start'.

Anything to distract from Northham's racism and his comments on aborting babies AFTER birth.

That being said, all is not lost:

VCDL VA-ALERT: Election results, analysis, way forward
renderTimingPixel.png

The Elections
Of the four possible results, yesterday's elections provided the worst scenario for gun owners in Virginia and one that VCDL has been warning about for almost a year.
Starting in early January, the state will be completely under Democrat control for the next two years: House, Senate, Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General.
Overall the VCDL-PAC supported candidates did well. For the Senate, 75% of the VCDL-PAC endorsed candidate won. For the House, 63% of the endorsed candidates won.
Initial Analysis
While this election was supposed to be a referendum on gun control, it appears to have had much more to do with recent court redistricting, which turned six Republican districts into blue-leaning districts. Chris Jones, Dave Yancey, and Rocky Holcomb lost their redistricted seats. Chris Stolle lost his race by 18 votes! A reminder that every vote counts. However, there will be a recount in Stolle's race and things could change with such a small margin.
Strong pro-gun legislators across the state won their elections, including some in tightly contested fights, such as Amanda Chase's race for her Senate seat, Nick Freitas (as a write-in nonetheless!), Dave LaRock, Emily Bewer, and Margaret Ransome. All won handily. Speaker Kirk Cox, who had been redistricted into a much, much harder district for a Republican to win, still managed to beat down his opponent!
The same for Barry Knight.
Tim Hugo lost with his opponent getting obscene amounts of cash from out of state donors, including over $600,000 from Michael Bloomberg.
Republican Senator Glen Sturtevant, who lost, voted to support a Red Flag Law bill earlier this year, weakening his base.
Anti-gun Rosilyn Tyler almost lost her seat. Her bad voting record on guns, especially if gun control gets passed in the upcoming General Assembly session, could well catch up to her.
The Road Ahead - Playing the Hand We Were Dealt
While gun control wasn't the driving force for voters that the gun controllers hoped for, they will still use the election results and their huge debt to Bloomberg and Soros to push their gun-control agenda. Senator Dick Saslaw said as much yesterday, as he promised movement on gun control to Moms Demand Action and Everytown.
While we don't have a firewall to stop bad gun bills from becoming law, we are not helpless.
  • The right to keep and bear arms is an enumerated and protected right, under both the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but also under Article 1, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution.
  • That leads to the next item: The Courts can be used to block unconstitutional laws and possibly provide an injunction against such a law taking effect until a final ruling has been made. We can use state and federal courts, including the Virginia and U.S. Supreme Courts.
  • Moderate Democrats might not go along with some of the more extreme gun-control schemes. Those of you in their districts need to keep the pressure on them.
  • We can push for more Second Amendment Sanctuary Localities, like Carroll County, which will refuse to enforce unconstitutional gun laws. Sheriffs and other law enforcement have no obligation to enforce unconstitutional laws, either.
VCDL will continue to be on the offensive, pushing to restore the gun rights that have been stripped away from us over the years.
What we need:
  • A stronger VCDL. Our membership is up 25% since last year (we have over 8,000 members and 30,000 subscribers to VA-ALERT). That's a good start, but we need to have as many members as we possibly can get (there are over 650,000 CHP holders in this state, not to mention hunters and target shooters). Encourage your friends, family, and co-workers to join us!
  • Gun owners being more active and visible. Write letters to the editor. Reach out to neighbors and friends, especially those on the fence about guns. Teach non-gun owners firearms safety and then take them shooting. Talk up VCDL at your local gun range or gun club. You'll be amazed at how many members of clubs and ranges don't have a clue about VCDL.
  • More volunteers manning VCDL tables at gun shows and other events.
  • A massive Lobby Day on January 20, 2020. Take off work that day, if necessary. This time we are rallying on the Capitol steps for the first time!
VCDL is not going to back down - the fight is on.

If the VCDL takes a page from Maryland's, Delaware's, and even my state's gun rights organizations, then they can successfully have bills be watered down or just scrapped entirely.

@HisRoyalHighness, Northram and Trudeau operate from the same playbook. When in political crisis make some "sacrificial offerings" of the political other to the base. Has nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with attacking a population that is viewed by most Democratic donors as Republican culture.

With the police. I don't think it was with a shrink even before.

Right. But HRH was talking about the psych evaluation specifically.
That’s interesting, might even consider immigrating to Finland After my retirement.

Well that or Italy.

Over here the psych evaluations are conducted by the National Police's psych doctors.... It is pretty effective, because it take some balls to go into the National police regional headquarters an undergo a full days testing. Specially when you are angry now.

Meanwhile in India of all places:

No Indian should have more than one gun, proposes Centre, gun owners fume
No Indian citizen should own more than one licensed firearm, the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) has proposed in a draft amendment to the Arms Act of 1959 that currently permits an Indian to own as many as three firearms.
The proposed law will affect owners of approximately four million licensed firearms in the country. A sizeable section of licence holders, many of whom are also shooters, possess multiple firearms. The Centre proposes to introduce the new laws through Arms Amendment Bill 2019 as HT earlier reported.
For members of shooting clubs, however, the old law as well as the proposed one permits one additional firearm.
Significantly, Monday’s move comes less than a month after the MHA proposed to reduce the permissible limit on firearms from three to two and sought opinion from state governments since law and order is a State subject.

Keep in mind this is India; a land overflowing with homemade Katta pistols.

Dear Supporter,
First legal claim now filed and served

Thanks to the support of thousands of New Zealanders like you, COLFO has asked the High Court to review Police Minister Stuart Nash's regulations banning certain ammunition and providing no compensation for surrendered ammunition.

You can read COLFO’s statement to the media here, and the Statement of Claim for Judicial Review here.
What this claim covers

In short, our claim is that the Minister’s decision to ban certain types of ammunition was unlawful. He is wrong to have considered that the banned ammo types had no valid civilian use and were of any higher risk than other types of ammunition.

We have asked the Court for orders that the decision not to compensate for newly banned ammunition was wrong on the basis that:

(1) it does not promote the objects of the Arms Act; and

(2) is contrary to the general legal principle that, if government powers are used to deprive lawful owners of property rights, they are entitled to proper compensation.
Why the focus on the ammo – what about compensation for firearms?

The key principle is that licenced firearms owners ought to be fairly compensated for changes in regulations. To establish this principle, we have chosen the strongest case first, where the mistakes and wrongfulness are stark, and won’t be bogged down by disputes and competing evidence on valuations (as it would be if we were to challenge the Government’s price schedule for the buy-back in first instance).

Our lawyers are of a firm view that the best way to attack the low levels of compensation for the current buyback is to establish the precedent that fair compensation is essential in order for the Government to achieve the objects under the Arms Act.

COLFO’s view is that the very low levels of firearms being handed-in to the Police is primarily because the Government is trying to be stingy with the price paid. By establishing that the Government’s decision not to compensate owners of ammo at all is both unlawful and counter-productive in achieving what the law is intended to achieve, we will be on a much better footing to force the Government to re-look at the whole compensation regime.

It is worth remembering too that the majority of the newly banned ammo was purchased directly from the Government (such as expired Defence Force stock). That makes the lack of compensation even more unreasonable.
What comes next?

We will let you know as soon as we have a date to fight this in court.

This is the first set of proceedings and is focused on the compensation arrangements. In the context of our fight against the proposed firearms register, and the possibility of yet another tranche of law changes, it is absolutely essential we get this right and set the precedent so if the Government move to ban even more types of arms, at least fair and reasonable compensation is actually paid.

Using the June law changes rushed through Parliament, the Police Minister could ban certain firearm types by the back door (avoiding Parliament altogether). If they get away with banning ammo or accessories without paying compensation, who's to say what the Minister will ban next? For example, banning ammo calibres would render whole classes of firearms totally unusable in New Zealand with no compensation.

I will email you soon with more information about our fight on the firearms register, and why we fear it is the first step to more types of firearms being banned.

In the meantime, thank you for your support.
COLFO
ends

Some countries have no military calibers allowed. Not unreasonable to predict they would ban those here. They banned the Browning Bar, they are only one brain fart from banning anything else here.

Over here the psych evaluations are conducted by the National Police's psych doctors.... It is pretty effective, because it take some balls to go into the National police regional headquarters an undergo a full days testing. Specially when you are angry now.

That is a good thing. Interview by some random police officer like we have now feels a bit arbitrary.

In Finland most applicants have gone through military service (which includes the psych evaluation with weird questions) + have the hunting lisence and + land or club to hunt with (or lives in Lapland or some Eastern counties where you can hunt on government land) / are taking part in voluntary reservist training actively / have been active member of a shooting club. And the weapon purchased always has to be useful for the applied purpose, so someone just doing duck hunting wont have a pistol or ak. So there are many places to catch someone who seem nutty.

I suspect that in future most of these mass killings will either be stabbings (like few recent cases) or happen with stolen guns.

New Zealand could ban some criminals from being near guns ()
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- New Zealand's government on Monday proposed legislation to ban certain criminals from being anywhere near guns even if they don't own them, a measure that politicians acknowledge has significant human rights implications. The proposed law would make it illegal for some criminals to live or visit a house where a gun is present or to travel in a car that has a gun inside. It could also prevent them from being around guns at other places including at work, on a farm or at a clubroom. The proposal is the latest gun-control measure introduced by the government since Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in March vowed to overhaul gun laws in the days after a gunman killed 51 people at two Christchurch mosques.
Is this real?

Nash said Nationals proposals were rejected for being too narrow. I have to wonder what else they have next. They have been wanting to stop trade between owners such as online sales.

"National's Justice spokesman Mark Mitchell urged the Government to work with the Opposition and "stay true to the intent" of the Bill and the real issues of organized crime and gangs.
He appealed to Nash to sit down with National and not target law abiding Kiwis."

...The spill over to those who have guns legally and someone on their list is in the vicinity is obvious.. Same Govt that previously wanted to limit shower time. That's all they do in caucus apparently. Sit around with fish and chips and beer and produce the next brain fart.

How laws are used to be petty. Yesterday they pulled over a kid running his own lawnmower business.
