So…. Supposedly there is child porn or at least underage inappropriateness recorded on that laptop. Either that is not tru, or he could be in a lot more trouble than even he could imagine getting in to.

what possible reason could there be to NOT shoot this down? collateral damage to something on the ground? no. it wouldn't take more than a few minutes planning and calculations to figure out a method to shoot this down without damaging anything on the ground.
dry run for a bio weapon platform?

I think that if the armed forces have been able to assess the threat of the balloon, shooting it down could reveal perhaps some weapons systems and eventually shortcomings.
Chinese have satellites to spy on the US and others, so this could be some sort of cheap weapons test.
I am suprised altitude is at 60000 feet. I recalled a higher attitude which put the balloon over US airspace, but outside of controlled airspace (just like satellites and space ships)
They didn't say it's the first one, so maybe its a failed mission since everyone can see it this time. Like to know how they stopped it transmitting and how much American tech it had on board either copied or OEM..embarrassed first by chinese cunning plan and secondly they used home grown tech to spy on home grown tech.
US Government has now stated they will make a attempt to take down the Balloon over the Atlantic Ocean. So we will get to see if we have the ability to take it down or not.

you could practically shoot it down with WWII tech. nothing would be revealed. if we cant shoot down a high altitude balloon we have serious problems. and like I said, the calculations to determine where it would fall once shot down arent exactly rocket science, not to mention it was over very sparsely populated part of the country for far more than enough time to shoot it down.

And me who thought Montana was one of the most densely populated state of the US!
But yes, it is worthy of note that there was, apparently, either no AA system, or any system with the appropriate reach anywhere near the path of that balloon.
Altitude is an issue in weapons capacity as well as international agreements. I think 18 NM is the above limit where a nation can claim sovereignity of its airspace. This altitude is defined as the altitude limit of any fixed wing aircraft.
I may be wrong though.
Anyways, some tweets made me laugh as the first kill of a F22 is not a MIG or Mirage F1, but a balloon.
Patriot PAC-3 would have no issues intercepting something at that height. Nor SM-6 on an AEGIS platform. I suspect that the reason why it was shot down over the ocean was because the power supply for it was unknown. Why contaminate an area of US soil with whatever chemicals it was using for power storage.
