That's absolutely not true about not being able to own whatever people wanted from the beginning. A lot of merchant ships had cannon, a lot of people put together private volunteer artillery batteries, and people could own whatever small arms that they wanted. It wasn't until 1934 that weapons had any regulation on the national level in this country. Ironically, almost all local and state weapons laws were aimed at keeping non whites from owning weapons.

For supersonic rounds, such as almost all rifle rounds, the only thing that suppressors do is take the edge off of the noise for the shooter and close bystanders, which, in turn, will help reduce hearing loss. The supersonic bullet bullet crack still produces a great deal of noise. Based upon the articles listed below, the shooter should always wear hearing protection when shooting even when using suppressors. Anyone who thinks that a suppressor makes it more difficult in normal circumstances to hear a firearm is delusional or lying.

I had a chance to fire a suppressed M3 "grease gun" in Viet Nam. The bolt clattering back & forth made quite a racket.

My suppressed AR15 was still loud as hell. Definitely needed ear protection to shoot it.

On the other hand my suppressed 10/22 firing subsonics makes almost no noise at all. It's the closest thing to the Hollywood suppressor I can think of.

As for Mr Google's claims about their use in NZ, 10's of thousands of rounds are fired suppressed for legal purposes for every one fired for illegal purposes. Crims who use firearms tend to want people to know they're being shot at.
