Politics Protests in Belarus

Over 100,000 protesters marched in Minsk again demanding Lukashnko's ouster. Lukashenko is trying to suppress the coverage of the protests in media by throttling and downright terminating mobile internet in the capital as well as rescinding foreign journalists accreditations.

Somehow this didn't get posted.

In other and totally unrelated news Russian authorities certify non-lethal implements including T-90, TOS-1 and Mig-29 for police use. Police to switch to unmarked green camouflage uniforms  [/sarcasm]

Hope this puts to bed any thoughts of Belarus being free to do what it wants just like Ukraine was blocked from joining NATO and the EU through contested territory. Russia will not let this domino fall. They will declare (all-out) war before they let their last western buffer states turns their backs on them and bolster their strategic rival.

This time things are different than in Ukraine. I'm surprised, but I'm getting a very well balanced coverage from the Russian media (no idea on TV news programs, though). The same outlets and journalists who labelled Ukrainians as Nazis, baby-killers, you know the usual stuff are asking and pleading with Putin to back off or even put a pressure on Lukashenko to relinquish the throne. They are openly stating that by backing Lukashneko who in their view wants Russian forces to suppress the protest would result in Belarus going the way of Ukraine.

Heh, you can see poster "328 незаконно" here.
328 is the Belarusian criminal codex article "2 to 5 years in prison for illegal drug sale"
Tihanovskaya and the coordinating soviet do not have any economic or political program but along with the new elections they promised to release all the kids who was imprisoned for selling drugs.

I thought that Maria Kolesnikova became the de facto leader of the protests.

The real leader is he who pays Maria Kolesnikova.

Yes, I've heard about that as well. Claims that she is a Russian "back up" plan since she wasn't arrested or harassed in any way. Read her interviews that could be interpreted as pro-Russian as well. However, no solid evidence, and I still can't get a bead on the Russian strategy if there is one, actually.

Yes, I've read about that too, Kolesnikova also said that Tihanovskaya shouldn't represent protesters because she resides now in the foreign country and is influenced by it. Looks like power struggle within opposition has started already.

Also what about this?
In 2014 Lukashenko wanted to create an alliance between Belarus and Ukraine and become its president
Donald Tusk, a Polish politician and former President of the European Council, spoke about this in an interview.

She shows up on mass rallies but she does not call for protests and strikes.
Pavel Latushko (former minister, former ambassador etc) was more popular than Kolesnikova for the last few weeks and he did a lot, but he had left for Poland.

Kolesnikova is the leader of Coordination Soviet now. The Coordination Soviet recognizes Tihanovskaya as the new president but as they admitted in the interview the Coordination Soviet does not have any communication with Tihanovskaya.
The protests do not have any leaders and are coordinated by network of telegram accounts lead by NEXTA

Probably it came unnoticed but Kolesnikova and NEXTA are widely promoted by Russian liberals (anti-Putin) and their most influential TV, radio and youtube channels.

I don't pay attention to Russia "opposition" media, and, honestly, consider Navalniy to be a savvy media-businessman. Was surprised to see interviews with both Kolesnikova and Tokhanovskaya in pro-Kremlin media outlets. Also, with an exception of RT (and maybe TV) even pro-Kremlin media took the side of anti-Lukashenko protesters.

Can't say I was surprised. Back in the mid-1990s up to early-2000s Lukashenko was very keen on Belarus joining with Russia to form a new state because he thought that he was going to become the president of this hypothetical entity. Also, in 2014 if such hypothetical elections were to take place in Ukraine and Belarus he most likely would have won as he would have been satisfactory candidate to satisfy opposite camps, hard-core nationalists AND folks longing for the days of long gone USSR.

Apparently the severely beaten by police 16 y o kid is the same person that hijacked the truck during protests. He was arrested today.

I'm sure the guy next to him wasn't holding a real gun and I'm sure there was a way to smuggle him to Poland or Lithuania.
