French President Emmanuel Macron has backed a proposal to train a large number of Ukrainian soldiers in the country, Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu told newspaper Le Parisien on Saturday.

“The president… has approved a training plan that will allow up to 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers to be welcomed in France,” he said.

“They will be assigned to our units for several weeks,” he said, adding that military training for the use of Caesar howitzers had previously been offered to Ukrainian soldiers.

“But now it’s a change of scale,” Lecornu said.

The minister said France had delivered 18 Caesar howitzers so far to Ukraine and that talks were going on to send six more. On top of these, France is also weighing the delivery of ground-to-ground missiles, Lecornu said.

He also pledged that France would provide Crotale short-range anti-air missiles, which are used to intercept low-flying missiles and aircraft.

“The number (of Crotales) is being determined with the Ukrainians, but it will be significant to allow them to defend their sky,” Lecornu said.

The aim is to complete the shipment of Crotales “within two months,” Lecornu said, taking into account the necessary training of Ukrainian soldiers.

Macron said on Wednesday France will deliver radar and air defence systems to Ukraine in the coming weeks, in particular to help Ukraine protest itself from drone and missile attacks.

Paris has previously supplied Mistral shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine.

Ukraine’s defence ministry posted a video on social media earlier this week aimed at giving France a gentle nudge to “win our hearts” through weapon supplies after repeated criticism that Paris has not been doing enough.

Australia continues to stand with the people of Ukraine and will provide additional support measures in response to Russia’s ongoing violation of international law.

Australia will provide an additional 30 Bushmaster protected mobility vehicles to Ukraine, bringing the total number of gifted Bushmasters to 90.

Australia will also join other partners providing critical training to Ukrainian troops. A contingent of up to 70 ADF personnel will deploy to the United Kingdom in January 2023 as part of the UK’s Operation INTERFLEX. No ADF personnel will enter Ukraine.

The Australian contingent will help generate additional capacity within the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Australia has provided Ukraine with a total of approximately $655 million in support, including $475 million in military assistance. This commitment demonstrates Australia’s continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The US Army awarded a $1.2 billion contract to Raytheon Technologies Co for six National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) for Ukraine on Wednesday, the Pentagon said.

The United States has approved sending Ukraine a total of eight NASAMS to help fend off Russian missile and drone attacks. Ukraine received its first delivery of two NASAMS air defense systems in November. Others will be delivered in future months once they are built.

Berlin plans to transfer to Ukraine additional Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled guns. The items are listed on the German government’s website. The list is updated weekly.

This time, 7 Gepard SPAAGs appeared in the planned deliveries.

German journalists wrote about the transfer of these weapons systems the day before. Deutsche Welle was told that Gepard systems could be transferred from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann stock or from Qatar, where they protect World Cup stadiums from possible aerial terror attacks.

Ukraine currently received 30 Gepard SPAAGs from Germany. However, the supply of ammunition for them is limited, since Switzerland, which is an ammunition manufacturer, refused to issue permission to transfer them to Ukraine.

It’s worth noting that Rheinmetall, after acquiring Spanish ammunition manufacturer Expo Systems SA, plans to establish the production of 35mm ammunition for Gepard anti-aircraft guns in Spain.

In the list of transferred assistance received from Germany there are also bridge-laying tanks and spare parts for Мі-24 helicopters:

  • 3 Biber bridge-laying tanks
  • 10 unmanned surface vessels (previously: 2)
  • 65 border protection vehicles (previously: 53)
  • 14 000 sleeping bags (previously: 10 thousand)
  • Mi-24 spare parts
  • 30 ambulances
Recall that in the summer 2022, the German government reported plans to transfer 16 Biber Bridge-Laying Tanks to Ukraine. It is an engineering and combat vehicle that carries and deploys a bridge at river crossings, anti-tank ditches and other obstacles.
