Technically it started with 1.0 when they murdered Lincoln. There's been more attempts and successful assassinations of runners and actual sitting presidents of the R's than D's and I will arguably defend that JFK was more along the lines of a founding father's liberalism than what the D's had actually turned into.

Jokes aside, I wouldn't be surprised if it did turn out to be an attention seeker after all. The perp was very young, which means he'd become a registered Republican when Trump was the undisputed king of the party, so what made him switch? Surely, if he hated Trump he would've never become a Republican to begin with. Who's his Jodie Foster gonna be?

A warning ignored is actually the least surprising bit of the whole incident, I'm afraid. Think of October 7. Think of the 2016 Berlin attack. Think of all the people around the world who would still be alive today if a law enforcement official hadn't been too overworked, too incompetent or too arrogant to actually recognise a clear and present danger.

Regardless of competence it's not good when you're supposed to shield the protectee with your body and your "body" barely covers one of their arms ... Never mind having to wrestle an assailant to the ground. Even if they were trained in hand-to-hand they'd be getting ragdolled. There is a point where only world class martial artists can compensate a massive disadvantage in size, weight and reach.
There have been more instances from a decade or more ago. Agents leaving their sidearm in their hotel room after they check out is especially common and it's not just USSS which this happens to, it's a thing with many western protection services.
Dutch agents responsible for protecting the royal family have had it happen far too often. In that agency agents are primarily recruited from the police instead of the military and for Dutch police their sidearm is something they carry around, not something they use (and training standards are not met and not enforced due to personnel and budget shortages).
The firearm needs to feel like an extension of their bodies which in all of these cases it clearly does not.
