Politics The Biden thread

I can't remember for some reasons, but, during his campaign, did Biden say how much he wanted/planed to forgive in student debt?

Or did he just make a blanket statement à-la "I will forgive the student debt"?

One way or another though, the student-loan system really has to be changed/reformed or just plain cancelled. This is borderline akin to predatory loan system.
Sure it allows people to go to college/university and such, but there is nothing certain in term of guarantees. Wether the individual succeeds or not he/she will start his/her active life with several US$-ks of debts on the back.
Funny that you should ask that very question. I looked it up earlier today because I was curious but didn't get a chance to post it. It certainly is more generous by my figuring if a person went to a public school or HBCU, namely all of it for an undergraduate degree. It's much less generous in other areas. This particular article was written in July 2020 when he was still a candidate.

What is President Biden doing for my small business?

Well first and foremost he nominated a woman to lead the Small Business Administration.

He also signed a EO to help minority small businesses owners.
We're screwed. She didn't even answer the question.

The ‘journalists’ are as corrupt and partisan as our politicians. Starting to really like Glenn Greenwald...

Truly an amazing, unbelievable- what does the left call them- 'gaffe'. LOL!! Leftspeak notwithstanding, Biden has an idiot's foolish consistency compounded by his inherent mental deficiencies and a slowly melting brain and says stupid and ignorant things with depressing regularity.

Strange choice of words, "security threats like ISIS, Afghanistan" instead of ISIS, al-Qaeda, Taliban.

Well....

Something "boggles" me.

Hasn't Trump been asked to undergo medical examination to makes sure he was physically and mentally fit for office?
I vaguely remember something like that happening when he took office.
I also vaguely remember the Dems pushing and being very insistent on this.

What I can't remember is: is it normal and/or part of the usual procedure for a new POTUS taking charge?

I'd suggest there is a plan. Just waiting for the clock to tick a little.

Seriously, I'd be interested in how many changes of clothes Joe has brought over to the White House.

Give it another month or 2 and Joe will have a minor fall, nothing to worry about.....then after careful consideration, he will regretfully have to listen to his wife, and Beau, and step aside, to give america the president they need and deserve.......

We're not even two months into this administration and I've never seen such a callous disregard for the lives of US citizens. Of course, the cynic in me wonders what the response would have been if it was a blue state in trouble, not a red state.

Of course, this will only increase talk of secession in TX.

When I read that it all it sounds like is that the department of energy is giving them permission to use energy generation that they would not normally be allowed to use due to enviromental issues, as long as they record and let them know what type of generation and how long it is used for and that it is only used to maintain the powersupply during the emergency.
So why are you up in arms over it??

Other than Texas' frozen windmills and snow covered solar panels (ours are snow covered here as well) it seems that when people need energy the most, green sources are the least reliable. Don't like the coal and oil keeping us warm and the lights on? OK, fine, how about nuclear? Oh wait....BIDEN IS MURDERING TEXANS!!!! See? Two can play this idiotic game.

Yes, permission is being given but with some major unnecessary hurdles by my read, hurdles that result in delays and costs. First, it appears to say they must have tried everything else before bringing those units on line. The problem is that it takes time to confirm that everything else has been tried, time that just isn't available. From what I little bit that I've read, it takes a coal power plant 10-20 hours to get to 70% capacity, but I don't know if that's a warm or cold start. If that number is from a warm start, obviously a cold start will take much longer. Even increasing output from a unit that is already started takes time, starting at several minutes and working its way up to several hours. Second, they have to identify the units and get approval for each unit before starting it up or increasing output. Also, the DOE won't give permission if the DOE determines that the wanted capacity isn't necessary. That being said, paragraph (D) does allow ERCOT to take a chance and get started on a unit, but if they get started and DOE doesn't approve, well, it doesn't specify what will happen except they will be operating out of their permit and thus subject to all sorts of regulatory nightmares which can't be adjudicated in a court. Most companies will be hesitant to take that risk, and will therefore delay startup until they get approval. Once again, delays of hours cost lives and result in yet more property damage. Still another problem is the requirement for a MINIMUM price of $1500/MWh. I've heard of governments putting caps on pricing to prevent price gouging before but I've never seen one mandate price gouging outside of taxes. Also, it says that the utility will have to buy emissions allowances despite that it's an emergency, thereby adding additional unnecessary costs to the already sky high bills that people will be paying.

How this actually played out isn't publicly known yet, but it's a bad look for the DOE and .gov in my opinion. The rule should have read something like this: "Do whatever you have to do and use whatever resources are available to stabilize the grid. You don't have to worry about government regulations except for safety regulations and won't be held liable for EPA violations for operations occurring during the emergency. We're extending this order to all operators in the lower 48 states to help generate extra capacity that can be used to help as well. After this is over, we'll return to previous operating conditions and will review changes as necessary to develop and more reliable system with enough float capacity to handle things like this in the future."
