There is some pretty interesting history if one reads all the preludes to each conflict. Most of us know what started WWI and it was for the most part involving EU intermingled Royal Families that each had strong ties with the different peoples, Ferdinand being assassinated and it started a snowball moving downhill. WWII and history is really interesting because all the nations that defeated Germany in WWI continued to punish Germany over 20 years with really strong sanctions. The people suffered a lot so it helped to build discontent and revenge by the time Hitler finally came to power. Japan was also being targeted by not allowing steel imports because it was a pretty well known fact they would use it to build ships and armor, not help the people. In WWI the US was pretty slow to bring troops to EU due to the massive death rate being caused at home due to the plague that was going around. They estimated that sending that plague overseas would kill so many Allies and Americans it was not a smart move until they had it under control. My Grandmother lost one older sister to that plague and she was married to a Horse Drawn Artilleryman stationed at Fort Sill. I have a couple good photos of her husband and actual post cards that he had mailed to her sister in 1915 and 16. I guess in the end it really depended on the fact that we helped our allies and pretty hard to choose a President either side that would done it differently. We most certainly were deep friends of Brittan and France and Australia and others so maybe it can just be said people did what was best, fight for survival because in WWII the AXIS was kicking our asses in the opening 4 years. Then again in those days Democrats were not what we see today, they were simply the other party. Just look at how many people voted for JFK and he wasn't loved in the Democratic Party because they hated Catholics !!! not to mention of course his Father was a simple rum runner during the depression and he was pretty much forced to leave Brittan during WWII, the only reason he was there to begin with was because he had Presidential ideas for himself and the Democrats wanted him somewhere where he couldn't make waves or get a solid backing. The youth today don't even know JFK was the first Catholic to be President of the US. Most Presidents of the US came from the old bible thumping belts. I guess it's a draw due to circumstance beyond their control ha I would hate to be around for the next one.
The US Civil War is a push. Both sides contributed to the conditions, the Confederacy fired the first shots though. I would put the weight of that war more on the Democrats than the Republicans. But still, "it's complicated".
Yeah, but then it gets really complicated. Should we count who was president, or should we count who controlled congress while the declaration of war or AUMF existed? Do we count WWII? I mean both of the main Axis powers declared war on the US first. At that point the US declarations were acknowledgment of the conditions as they existed.
