Politics Riots in Kazakhstan - jan 2022

Samat Abish, the nephew of ex-President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, was detained in Alma-Ata

According to the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, oil and gas production in Kazakhstan did not stop. The decline in production was only at the Tengiz field due to restrictions on the export of products. All three refineries of the republic are operating normally.

Which begs the question: why would the prices go up in a country producing its own energy?

To balance the decline from Tengiz? And that decline would warrant a 100% increase in price?

Sounds a bit weird.

Also, that Arman guy looks like the "regular" (from a local pov) criminal gang thug. Though, coming from Turkey?
Lots a bad stuff transiting in Turkey it seems...

Greed.
BTW, even with that increase the price of automotive gas was way below price elsewhere while wages are higher then in other stans.
The real reason for riots wasn't the price increase but rivalry between 2 aristocratic Chengizid clans.

At the same time, as reported by Russian media:

In his nation address statement Tokaev said that he gave the order for the military and police to shoot to kill.
He also said that 20 thousand bandits attacked Alma-Ata, including foreign nationals.

No comments... I don't think this guy knows how to diffuse this situation.
I think this is a sound decision. If you say openly that soon everyone will start shooting at everyone, the uncertain crowd will scatter home. As for the rest... The armed people who are smashing government buildings and shops are really bandits. Although, I think, their number is still overestimated.

Fugitive Kazakh banker Mukhtar Ablyazov said he is the leader of opposition and protests in the republic.

Mukhtar Qabyluly Ablyazov is a Kazakh businessman and political activist who served as chairman of Bank Turan Alem, and is a co-founder and a leader of the unregistered political party Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan.

Soviet nostalgics are to be mostly found in Western countries.

"Communism was awesome", "communism was never really tried", "it wasn't done properly", "Stalin wasn't such a bad guy", "viva el Che!", etc...

In Russia and former soviet countries you won't see much teenagers, young adults and adults cheering for "the good old days" to be back.
For some reason, in our regional branch of the Communist Party, the situation is reversed ?
However, it seems that such topics are best discussed in a separate thread or in private messages.

It’s fair game to try to compare different unrest but BLM/French YV or the KZ latest violence seen have no real common ground or spark tbh.
Kazakhstan riot is most comparable with Kyrgizstan "revolutions". For western public i think most known similar is "arab spring" riots.

Also, you guys a bit overestimate "corruption issues" as a main reason. Kazakhs (and central asians in general, well may be any asians, i do not know) often see corruption not as a problem, but as opportunity and advantage. Part of national identity.

Tajik servicemen board an Il-76MD to be sent to Kazakhstan. They have RPG-7 grenade launchers, PKM machine guns and SVD sniper rifles.

Yes. This is an informative thread on an important ongoing world event, thank you to those who make it worth reading.

We have already analyzed this video. It's fake. In addition, the speakers' language has a strong Ukrainian or Kuban accent, which is not typical for Kazakhstan.
What about this one? It is supposed to be Kazakh protests coordinator in Ukraine.

Bro, does he look like the leader of something serious?) Yes, this is a Kazakh. He says that he is "the coordinator of the headquarters of democratic elections in Kazakhstan." A knocked out tooth makes it very difficult to understand what he is saying.
