Mil News Current Iran/Iraq/US Tensions and Actions Unfolding

Can I have some of your meds please?

Let's see.

The IRGC build and trained Hezbollah that not only managed to chase Israel out of South Lebanon (1985-2000) but also brought the IDF to a standstill in 2006.

In Syria, it managed (together with Russia) to save the Syrian government from being toppled by Western, Turkish and Arab-backed militant groups.

In Iraq, it successfully confronted IS and continues to put pressure on American political influence and bases.

In Yemen, it helped the Houthis to defeat Saudi Arabia (world's largest importer of arms) and has assisted them with sophisticated drone and missile attacks on Saudi infrastructure.

In Gaza, Iran has turned previous-amateur groups like Hamas and PIJ into professional guerilla forces.

The IRGC has simultaneously build up Iran's missile force that the Israelis and Americans consider to be top-notch, acquiring the ability to flatten the critical infrastructure of any state in the Middle East at will.

The IRGC is a beast not to be underestimated.

I think it was around 2014 the IRGC was fighting isis along side the Pesmerga/Kurds Forces in Iraq. No Country would formally admit Iran was fighting in Iraq. I think they were there mostly as advisory but we had our grids marked out on target lists accordingly so we couldn't target friendlies. Never heard their numbers but the Kurds were able to keep isis out of Baghdad.

Haha.

The Kurds got their asses kicked by IS-forces in 2014, and desperately fled from places like Makhmur, Gwer and Sinjar in northern Iraq. At one point, IS-forces were only 20km away from Erbil. The Kurds got so scared that Barzani made frantic calls to Biden (VP at the time) and Soleimani to plea for help. Eventually, together with support from Iran and the US, IS-forces were brought to a standstill.

The Kurds couldn't even defend their own cities. To claim that they kept IS out of Baghdad is laughable and incorrect.

I hate to be the guy that points things out but....had President Trump not ordered the destruction of the ISIS caliphate in 2017, things might be quite different today.

Trump didn't do a damn. The campaign against IS was put in place during the Obama administration. The orange man only took credit for something that was already put in process before him.

The Kurds with the Women fighters are some of the bravest fighters I've ever met. Shame they've been screwed out of their own Country twice. & isis will be around for awhile.

Which bravery? The Peshmerga frantically fled from places like Mahmur, Gwer and Sinjar, and left the Yazidis completely defenceless against IS-thugs who murdered and enslaved them in mass.

The Peshmerga is overrated.

Your not by any chance, related to Dominic Cummings are you? He was very clear that there was only one person of worth in downing street....

You really should brush up on that. With Obama’s restrictions it was a stalemate and Obama himself said at that rate it would take decades. Trump lifted all restrictions, let the military do its thing and the caliphate was gone in months.

Agreed here, there was only one way to deal with thugs in black clothes beheading, drowning “apostates”, throwing alleged gays out of tall building or burning people alive.

The way in question was the Dresden way:

Point is that the foundation of the US campaign was put in place by the Obama administration, and while the orange man did relax relevant RoE, he isn't by any means responsible for ISIS' demise.

The tide was turning for those head-choppers long before Trump took the presidency.

Sometimes it just takes some overkill.

Not really.

Then I’m pretty curious about what was mainly responsible for ISIS demise? Probably a rookie question to pose but even though Trump did some wrong and missteps during his tenure and especially toward the end, granting him to have pounded IS harshly enough doesn’t seem to be a bridge too far?

Went up to Sinjar Mtns a few times. Get the Kurds the right weapons & they fight pretty good.

Does it begin with 'I'???

ISIS can only blame themselves for their strategic overreach. They went all-high on their successes, and forced the US to intervene AFTER they went after the Kurds. Remember, the United States pretty much stayed on the sidelines when IS expanded its rule in both Syria and Iraq. Only when IS threatened to attack Erbil (where the US has a significant military and intelligence foothold), did the United States finally intervene.

See this (dating 2014):

How Kurds Came to Play Key Role in U.S. Plans to Combat Islamic State

ERBIL, Iraq—The anti-Islamic State strategy the U.S. is developing first began to take shape a month ago after a series of increasingly urgent phone calls from this Kurdish city.

In one, Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani told Vice President Joe Biden the jihadists were within 25 miles of Erbil, which is both the capital of the Kurdish region and home to U.S. military, intelligence, diplomatic and corporate offices. The message: Unless the U.S. stepped in, Erbil could fall in days.

"Something in Barzani's voice made [Mr. Biden] think, 'We need to do something here,' " said a U.S. official describing the call, which Kurdish officials also confirmed.

Later that day, President Barack Obama, who had long resisted pressure from the government in Baghdad to help fight the Islamic State menace, authorized airstrikes on the militants approaching Erbil. He also approved both overt and covert programs to resupply the Kurdish fighters known as the Peshmerga against the jihadist threat spanning the Syria-Iraq border.

You have to understand, Iran has basically two navies. The regular navy and the IRGC-Navy. The regular navy doesn't control Iran's missile force; the IRGC does.

This accident happened with Iran's regular navy.

Iran's expeditionary forces and overseas operations are conducted by the IRGC. The effect is minimal on Iran's overall strategic situation.
Don't you just get that sinking feeling
