In 20 years of fighting over 65,000 members of the Afghan security forces have died. The casualties the US suffered in Vietnam were less and by a much larger population. Yet it has continued to be a national trauma for decades.
But yeah the Afghans let others do the heavy lifting ?
I think US casualties in Vietnam are around 75000, and in a ten year scale, and in a country that was'nt their own. .
You might want to compare with killed Vietnamese soldiers, and I would say the number is higher.
There is no doubt many Afghans were brave, did what they could in a culture of corruption, of buying off elders and local leaders, and in fear of their families being targetted (things the Taliban don' t care about). There is no doubt many people were exemplary, and they deserve a way out they might not get. In one word, I have more respect for the people still there than the people who presented themselves up to now as refugees, in their 20' s, who could have fought for their country and their people.
Overall, I believe the Afghans are mostly indifferent to centralized leadership, and respect their local leaders, who made deals with the Taliban. In countries like that, I suppose day to day survival trumps it all.
Donald Trump was right to leave, and Biden is right to enforce it. The date set in spring was a poor choice, but given the fact the taliban did' nt even need to fight, leaving in the winter might not have had any difference.
It' s harrowing, but the Americans lost 4000 people there, not counting the ones coming back with crippling injuries. It's very difficult for those Americans, Brits and others who took the fight to make it a better place to see thing turn like that. at least for now.
