Finnish court hands Voislav Torden life sentence for war crimes

The Helsinki District Court has sentenced Voislav Torden, a Russian national, to life imprisonment for four war crimes.
The prosecutor had sought a life sentence for Torden on five counts of war crimes, but the district court dismissed one of the charges.

The court found that Torden was indisputably a member of the far-right Rusich paramilitary group, which fought against Ukrainian forces in the Luhansk separatist region over a decade ago.
In its verdict, the court determined that Torden took part in the killing of one soldier and had taken and disseminated degrading images of the fallen soldier from the scene. Torden had also declared online and on social media that Rusich would show no mercy.
At the time of the events, Torden used the name Jan Petrovski. Prosecutors argued that, under Torden's command, the extremist group massacred 22 Ukrainian soldiers and seriously wounded four others on 5 September 2014.
Torden's lawyer, Heikki Lampela, said that Torden would appeal the verdict.
Ukraine's Prosecutor General thanked the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the prosecutors for their work in securing Torden's conviction, via the messaging service X.
First Ukrainian war trial in Finland
The trial was held in Finland, as the Finnish Supreme Court ruled that Torden could not be extradited to Ukraine due to poor conditions in its prisons and the assessment that he would not receive a fair trial there.
The case was tried in the Helsinki District Court as it concerned an international crime, governed by international treaties that are binding on Finland.
Torden was detained by the Finnish Border Guard in August 2023. He is on the EU sanctions list and banned from entering Finland.
The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service (Supo) has warned that the case could endanger Finns in Russia, who could be detained to be exchanged for Torden.
Finnish courts have previously handled war crimes cases related to Iraq, Liberia, and Rwanda. This was, however, the first time that charges related to suspected crimes in Ukraine have been brought and tried in Finland.
