Putin evicts Ukrainians who refuse Russian passports from occupied territories
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that obliges Ukrainian citizens in Russia and its occupied territories to either leave or obtain Russian passports by September of this year.
– Ukrainian citizens residing in the territory of the Russian Federation who do not have legal grounds for residence in the Russian Federation are obliged to leave the Russian Federation on their own initiative or legalize their legal status in the Russian Federation by September 10, 2025, the text of the law states.
The law also applies to the “new regions”, i.e. the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, which Russia has unilaterally annexed. According to the law, non-Russians residing in the regions must also undergo a medical examination, which includes testing for HIV infection and drug use.
Putin had previously claimed in March that almost all residents of the occupied territories had been issued Russian passports. In the spring of 2024, Putin said that more than 3.2 million residents of the occupied regions had been issued Russian passports.
