4 Ukrainian MRAPs destroyed supposedly by KA-50. :( Not sure how to verbalize this, but there must be SOME way that if you are making a push, or moving through contested areas that you could reasonably defend against this, at the least destroying the helo (or whatever weapon system it is) after they target the assets, or detecting them before and being able to either destroy them or chase them out of range of whatever weapons they have. things like this make me feel like Ukraine is lacking, I dont know, some type of basic multi layered capability, or, maybe sometimes they have it, and sometimes they dont. it seems pretty basic capability you need to have if you want to be successful in maneuver warfare.
The Soviets/russians have the MANPADS, Shilka/Tunguska, Pantsir, Buk and S-300/400, all of which overlap the previous and next system in both range and altitude. Many NATO tactical level air defence systems are Stinger-based (or other MANPAD missile), meaning the Vikhr missile easily outranges it. There aren't enough ground-based options imo in between a MANPAD and Patriot-like systems and I believe it's doctrinal (and penny pinching as usual). For the short-medium range I guess NATO assumes on always having air superiority so the gap is filled by fighters and above all interdicting enemy aviation during an air campaign before they ever get within range of BLUFOR ground forces.

Didn't fully think that one through for themselves, never mind for GREENFOR forces that don't have much of an air force.

NATO had a lot of mobile intermediate range SAM systems during the cold war - things like Chapparral, Roland, Tracked Rapier and ADATS. All decommissioned long ago though.

Exactly, penny pinching, especially on not having it replaced.

Or just recognition that day one of any NATO vs Russia air combat is going to be a very miserable experience for Russia. There may not be a day two...

But is it right to assume air superiority/supremacy based on only one branch? And it's pretty clear especially to the US that the big (near) peer opponent is going to be China. Planning equipment based on russia for a war with China might be a mistake. Just because China started out as a variant of the soviet military doesn't mean they('ll) remain that way, or that things like corruption and nepotism will deteriorate their capabilities like it does for the russians.

Since right now there are more F-35's alone in NATO service than there are combat aircraft in the entire Russian airforce, air superiority is pretty much a given, if not outright air supremacy. I doubt much of NATO would interested in participating in any US vs. China conflict.

The plot thickens.....

Ukraine keeps doing well in Orc land - Orc army not responding worth a rat's a$$... mostly thinking out loud here, but how long before Putler thinks Comrade Stalin's purge his officer corps idea should be brought back? His senior officer cadre has to be extremely nervous right now especially Shoigu and Gerasimov.

Shoigu was replaced by a different guy a few months ago if you haven't noticed.
He had no military experience whatsoever and was pretty incompetent.
His corruption was legendary even how for the RuZZian standards.
Many of his minions were arrested on corruption charges before he was replaced by a professional economist.
