Of the three cruisers in the Gloucester subgroup, only one survived the Second World War. HMS Manchester and HMS Gloucester were both sunk, in 1942 and 1941 respectively. Only HMS Liverpool survived the war, serving until 1952.

Armoured cruiser Yakumo at anchor in Kure, 1905.
Yakumo1905.webp

Yakumo was ordered in 1897 from the Aktien-Gesellschaft Vulcan Stettin shipbuilding company in Germany.
Completed in 1900, Yakumo would have a very active career in the Japanese Navy. She served in the Russo-Japanese War, taking part in the Battle of the Yellow Sea and the Battle of Tsushima.
Quickly surpassed by newer warships, Yakumo would be put to use as a training ship. She assumed this role during the First World War and continued through the Second World War. Confined to Japanese home waters, Yakumo managed to survive the destruction of the Second World War. Due to this, she was used as a transport ship after the war, helping to bring Japanese citizens back to Japan. She transported almost 10,000 people back to Japan before she was finally ordered sold for scrapping in 1946.

A Flettner Fl 265 being tested on Königsberg class light cruiser Köln in 1941. Köln was one of the earlier experiments that tested helicopter operations. In 1940, she underwent a refit that also included the additon of a landing pad installed on the roof of the afg superfiring 15cm turret (Turret Bruno). She operated the FL 265 first and some sources say she later tested the more advanced Flettner Fl 282. Köln carried her helicopter landing pad until 1942 when it was finally removed.
