The U.S. Army will grow its Patriot air and missile defense force structure, the head of Space and Missile Defense Command told reporters in an Aug. 8 briefing.

“The Army senior leaders — from the secretary [to] the chief — they recognize the demands on the Patriot force,” Lt. Gen. Daniel Karbler said at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium. “We are addressing that through increasing our Patriot units that are out there.”

The Army has 15 Patriot battalions across the active force with funding authorized to build one more.

“He Just Lost It In The Weather” – Audio From F-35 Crash Response Emerges

Video of the crash site and radio calls made shortly after the F-35 pilot ejected add new color to this developing story.

Much about the recent crash of a U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Joint Strike Fighter in South Carolina remains unknown, but some additional details have now emerged thanks to recorded air traffic and first responder radio calls. Video of the site where debris from the jet was found has also now become available. You can read more about what is already known about this mishap in The War Zone's earlier reporting.

F-35 Debris Found In Field After Frantic Search For Missing Jet

The ‘zombie’ F-35B has been missing since yesterday after its pilot ejected after experiencing a mishap and the jet flew on.

Debris from a U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Joint Strike Fighter that has been missing since yesterday has been found in South Carolina. The jet's pilot safely ejected near Charleston after experiencing a still unknown issue that also rendered the transponder inoperable, but the aircraft continued on for some time. The jet was on autopilot and was not tracked to a crash site, so a major search operation was launched

The Army is changing the name of its new rifle after accidentally taking a name from an unrelated existing weapon, the service announced Wednesday.

The service's upcoming M5 from Sig Sauer will now be called the M7 after it was discovered Colt Industries also makes a weapon called the M5. The light machine gun set to replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, or SAW, the M250, will not change.

"The Army originally chose the designation XM5 as the name of the new rifle in March," a service spokesperson said in a statement. "Since then, the service learned that the M5 name is used by Colt Industries for one of its 5.56mm carbines."

'I ejected': Pilot of crashed F-35 jet in South Carolina pleads for help in phone call

Emerging details from a four-minute phone call made by a military pilot to an emergency dispatcher show he was pleading for medical help after he ejected from an F-35 fighter jet and into a South Carolina resident's backyard.

The resident of the home, in North Charleston, first tells the dispatcher: “We got a pilot in the house, and I guess he landed in my backyard, and we’re trying to see if we could get an ambulance to the house, please."

The pilot then gets on the call to say: “Ma’am, a military jet crashed. I’m the pilot. We need to get rescue rolling. I’m not sure where the airplane is. It would have crash-landed somewhere. I ejected.”

Navy Destroyer Looks Significantly Different After Major Upgrade

The SEWIP Block III alters the Arleigh Burke destroyer’s appearance fairly dramatically via huge new extensions onto its superstructure.
BYJOSEPH TREVITHICK|PUBLISHED SEP 22, 2023 7:12 PM EDT

New pictures show what we have long anticipated — the new AN/SLQ-32(V)7 Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block III's dramatic impact on U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke class destroyers' contours. USS Pinckney (DDG-91) is the first of the Burkes to get SEWIP Block III, which is a revolutionary electronic warfare upgrade for these vessels.

The new electronic warfare system and other upgrades were installed on the ship as part of a regularly scheduled maintenance period that lasted around two years. The ship left drydock at General Dynamics NASSCO's yard in San Diego, California, in August, but it is unclear if it has formally returned to service.

Ingalls Shipbuilding division announced the successful launch of the Navy’s third America-class amphibious assault ship Bougainville (LHA 8) from its floating dock into the Pascagoula River on Saturday.

“This launch is a significant accomplishment for our entire LHA shipbuilding team, and we are honored to be building such a versatile ship for our Navy and Marine Corps partners,” Ingalls Shipbuilding Amphibious Ship Program Manager Gene Miller said. “It is also a testament to the outstanding teamwork we see every day as our shipbuilders continue the critical work of preparing Bougainville for delivery.”

On Sept. 9, Bougainville was translated from land to the company’s floating dry dock using translation railcars to support the ship. While in the dry dock, the Ingalls team completed final prep work for launch.

Bougainville is the first ship in the America class to be built with a well deck. The ship will retain aviation capabilities while adding the surface assault capability of a well deck and a larger flight deck configured for F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and MV-22 Osprey aircraft. These large-deck amphibious assault ships also include top-of-the-line medical facilities with full operating suites and triage capabilities.

President Joe Biden has asked Congress to approve a supplemental budget request for fiscal 2024 that will allow Ukraine to continue its fight against Russian invaders and deliver military capabilities to Israel as they confront Hamas terrorists.

If Congress passes the supplemental request, it will also provide money for crucial needs in the Indo-Pacific, including strengthening the U.S. submarine industrial base — a key component to the Australia-United Kingdom-United States military agreement.

The money is crucial to U.S. national security, President Joe Biden said during a prime time broadcast from the White House last night. Countering the brutal Hamas terrorists in the Middle East and helping Ukraine defeat President Vladimir Putin's invasion of their country will enhance security worldwide, the president said. Failure to do this would reward terrorists and dictators and embolden them to continue their assaults on democracy, the president said.

This supplementary request would enable Israel and Ukraine to continue their fights.

"This supplemental request invests over $50 billion in the American defense industrial base, ensuring our military continues to be the most ready, capable and best-equipped fighting force the world has ever seen," said Salanda D. Young, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, in a letter to the House of Representatives. "The funding will expand production lines, strengthen the American economy, keep us safe and create new American jobs."

The supplemental request also contains humanitarian aid to those impacted by the Hamas attacks in Gaza and suffering from the brutal Russian invasion. There is also money for border security.

The request also "provides resources to ensure we can compete with China by offering developing countries a better value proposition, and it supports U.S. capabilities and initiatives that bolster security and stability in the Indo-Pacific," Young wrote.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the budget request comes amid a global inflection point, and it needs to be approved soon. Following the attacks on Israel, the U.S. delivered military aid to protect the people of the country from Hamas. These included interceptor rockets for the Iron Dome missile defense system. "The administration is now requesting funding to invest in Israel's defense against terrorists, including by strengthening its air and missile defense systems," Sullivan said. "We are requesting an increase in security assistance for Israel to help it protect its people as well as the many Americans who live in Israel and travel to Israel."

Sullivan said the United States must continue to stand up to tyranny and aggression and defend Ukraine against the Russian invasion. "We know from history that if we walk away and let someone like Vladimir Putin erase Ukraine's independence, he will not stop there and would-be aggressors around the world would be emboldened. We have to send the unmistakable message that, in the 21st century, a dictator cannot be allowed to conquer or carve up his neighbor."

Not funding Ukraine would send the message that dictators could outwait the United States because the country would walk away from allies, Sullivan said.

The weapons and military aid the United States and members of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group provided have helped Ukraine. The country uses the aid in its efforts to win the battles for Kyiv, Kherson and Kharkiv.

"However, the funding and authorities the Congress previously approved overwhelmingly has nearly run out, and we need congressional action to ensure that we can continue to meet Ukraine's battlefield needs and protect its people while they're under attack," Sullivan said.

The supplemental budget request will also strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific and support key allies and partners as part of U.S. efforts to maintain peace and stability, the national security advisor said. "Our allies and partners in the region need our support more than ever, and this request provides significant new resources to help them build the capabilities necessary to meet emerging challenges," he said.

The US Navy has dispatched a guided-missile submarine to the Middle East.

The US Central Command shared a picture that seemed to show the submarine in Egypt's Suez Canal. CENTCOM posted an announcement on X on Sunday noting that an Ohio-class nuclear submarine "arrived in the US Central Command area of responsibility," without offering further details regarding the specific location or the name of the vessel in question.

Newsweek has contacted CENTCOM by email to request further information.

The American B-21 Raider bomber, worth $700 million, made its first flight. This is reportedly the world's first sixth-generation bomber. The B-21 Raider long-range stealth bomber was developed as part of the Long Range Strike Bomber program. Northrup Grumman Corporation received a contract for its development in October 2015. The US Congress in its report said that the new B-21 Raider should by 2040 completely replace the fleet of old strategic bombers - the B-1 Lancer, created almost 50 years ago, and the B-2 Spirit, which was created more than 30 years ago.

The United States has tested the promising operational-tactical missile PrSM, which will replace the ATACMS missile. Lockheed Martin did not provide any details, but it is noted that the missile is capable of “neutralizing” targets at a range of up to 400 km, the estimated missile range is up to 499 km. Preliminary test results showed that the Precision Strike Missile Increment 1 missile confirmed its nominal performance. The missiles are planned to be used on the M270A1 and M142 HIMARS MLRS. Lockheed Martin reported that the corporation received three new contracts for the production of missiles. In the future, the new missile should replace all MGM-140 ATACMS operational-tactical missiles.
