I used to have to do a double take at Australian Army Maj's and WO2's in field kit. At a glance trying to work out which was which till I knew to look for the "Crown in the box" for the WO2.

Big crown, crusty old bloke, WO2, little crown, zealous gleam in his eye, Major. Or crusty old bloke, terminal rank Major. Yeah it can get a bit confusing.

Yeah its not helped here as we have quite a few Retreads/CFR's (Commissioned From the Ranks) officers as well the Terminal/Career Majors you mentioned, so disgruntled, aged looking Majors are reasonably common. Recently had a guy who was a company commander when we first went into Timor in 99 retire this year still a Maj.
The Field WO position at our OCS is manned in a reciprocal deal with RMC by an Australian Infantry WO2. They are known to get chucked the occasional salute by non local personnel to the camp.

I saluted a Petty Officer at the RAN base on the Brisbane River as a young digger, when you've got that much S**t going on with your rank slide, you're going to get saluted navy dude, deal with it.
