The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), developed and operated by Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, mapped approximately three million galaxies in just 300 hours.

The Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey is like a Google map of the Universe where most of the millions of star-like points on the map are distant galaxies – about a million of which we’ve never seen before.

The initial results are published today in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

Pilbara rock touches down on Mars

NASA sent a 3.5-billion-year-old ultramafic dunite magnesium-rich rock with its Perseverance rover into space, which landed on Mars this morning Australian time.

The rock was collected near Marble Bar six years ago and was chosen due to the Pilbara region’s similarity to Perseverance’s landing site, Jezero Crater.

Southern Launch’s chief executive, Lloyd Damp, told Guardian Australia the company intended to start launches before the end of 2021.

Australian observations of geophysical phenomena related to the “Carrington/Hodgson” solar events of August/September 1859 are summarized.
Bright aurora were seen at least as far north as Brisbane. Telegraph services were disrupted in more southern regions, the magnetometer at Melbourne was greatly disturbed, and newspapers of the day carried useful information.
No information has yet been uncovered from the more northern areas of the continent, which at that time had few sizeable European communities.
