Hiroshi "Hershey” Miyamura was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extreme bravery during the Korean War. Joining the U.S. Army in 1945, he served in a Japanese-American unit and trained as a machine gunner. As a corporal in the Korean War, Miyamura used his bayonet in hand-to-hand combat to defend his men from an enemy attack and also used his machine gun to repel the onslaught. "He maintained his magnificent stand despite his painful wounds, continuing to repel the attack until his position was overrun. When last seen he was fighting ferociously against an overwhelming number of enemy soldiers,” according to his Medal of Honor citation. Miyamura was made a prisoner of war and was released in 1953.
