Ensign Jessie L Brown aboard USS Leyte, in 1950. The first African American US Navy Aviator, Ensign Brown served in the Korean War and was tragically killed in a crash near the Chosin Reservoir. An account of his story was told in the book Devotion.

Hiroshi "Hershey” Miyamura was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extreme bravery during the Korean War. Joining the U.S. Army in 1945, he served in a Japanese-American unit and trained as a machine gunner. As a corporal in the Korean War, Miyamura used his bayonet in hand-to-hand combat to defend his men from an enemy attack and also used his machine gun to repel the onslaught. "He maintained his magnificent stand despite his painful wounds, continuing to repel the attack until his position was overrun. When last seen he was fighting ferociously against an overwhelming number of enemy soldiers,” according to his Medal of Honor citation. Miyamura was made a prisoner of war and was released in 1953. Air Force Major Dean Hess, commanding officer of a fighter squadron which operates from an advance Fifth Air Force base in Korea, receives the thanks of President Syngman Rhee. The appreciation was for slowing down the North Korean advance. Major Hess is from Marietta, Ohio. 1 August 1950.
