In an air battle on June 25, 1939, Zabaluev's plane was shot down, and the pilot landed by parachute in the territory occupied by the Japanese, but was rescued by Sergei Gritsevets, who landed his fighter next to the steppe and raised it together with Zabaluev in the air next to the Japanese soldiers.

Vladimir Nikolaevich Kalachev (1910-1942) in the Red Army since 1932. From May 23 to September 16, 1939 he took part in battles with Japanese troops in the area of the Khalkhin-Gol river, in total during the conflict he conducted 20 air battles, personally shot down 6 enemy aircraft and 2 in a group with comrades. On August 29, 1939, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He was also awarded the Mongolian Order For Military Valor.
He took part in the campaign of the Red Army troops in Western Ukraine and Western Belarus. In 1939 - 1941 he was the commissar of the 35th Aviation Regiment and the inspector for piloting techniques of the 72nd Aviation Division of the Transcaucasian Military District. From August 1941 he commanded the 17th Aviation Regiment of the Ural Military District. In 1942, Major V. N. Kalachev fought on the Bryansk Front as commander of the 15th Aviation Regiment. In air battles, personally shot down 4 enemy aircraft and 2 as part of a group. On June 28, 1942, in an air battle over his airfield near the village of Mokrets-Staro rammed an enemy plane and died.
