Britain's defence secretary Ben Wallace has told virtual audiences at a Royal United Services Institute event to expect substantial cuts to the armed forces' capability portfolio. Whilst the Royal Navy can look forward to a significant increase in spending, Wallace said that the jury was still out on which feathers the Army would have to shed, speaking of "tough choices" lying ahead.
"But those choices will allow us to invest […] Sometimes it will mean quality over quantity or the good rather than the perfect. Or simply letting go of some capabilities. Too often we cling to sentimentality when we need to explore alternatives," he said. Wallace did, however, promise that Britain would not abandon the use of armour and announced an imminent decision for an upgrade to the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. (

The article also mentions how badly pressed for money the RN is; and obviously I am aware of the fact that the United Kingdom is an island nation … but given everything that's been reported on the British Army, isn't it the place to which Boris' £16 billion should've rather gone? At least parts of it? I can't deny my impression that that spending increase symbolises a "cling[ing] to sentimentality".
