Airbus sells the helicopter as the H145M. But it wasn't designed by Airbus. It was designed by MBB, namely under the designation of BK-117. Under that name it was certified by FAA and EASA back in the day.

The German Air Force has been operating the helicopter as the H145M for years.

However, earlier this year someone – probably someone hell-bent on proving the stereotype that Germans indeed are sticklers for rules – realised the type certificate of the helicopter shows a different name. So they embarked on a crusade to replace "H145M" in official lingo with "BK-117".

Which requires an awful lot of replacing, obviously. Each item of equipment, each printed form, each code of software somehow including or displaying the term "H145M" will have needed changing.

And this insane sea of red tape is why the German armed forces aren't the seventh-most potent military in the world despite receiving the seventh-largest military budget. The bureaucracy is insane. Insane sums of money and insane amounts of work hours are squandered away.

The worst part is that the Luftwaffe does not even use the designations entered into the certificates anyway. For instance, they call it the "Eurofighter" – not the "Eurofighter EF-2000 Typhoon".
not entire MBB design more like a cooperation between Kawasaki and MBB which both work on the design , I wonder after MBB bought by airbus what happened to the deal of MBB and Kawasaki ? does Kawasaki still built the h145m for Asian market and Airbus only product HM145m for the rest of the world market ? or the old deal was drop totally ? ( the origin deal that Kawasaki will built the bk117 sold in asia and mbb for the rest of other market ( Europe , America ,Africa )

The German defence budget continues to rise and will grow to $56.12 billion in 2021. Not included in that figure are some $3.83 billion in further funding allocated to the military from an anti-pandemic stimulus package. The funds are reserved for ad-hoc purchases fulfilling immediate requirements – such as the 1,000 armoured logistical trucks and 48 tank transporters acquired last week. (Source, German)

Little by little, the bird builds its nest.
btw any reason for german to chose typhoon over f35 ? ( maybe typhoon are stop gap ? for future german ( European) 6th gen fighter ? + any reason why german navy chose damen over german ship yard to built they ship ?

Finland;

Tuomas Gerdt, who was the last living Mannerheim cross knight, was laid to rest today.

Mannerheim cross was the highest military honor in Finnish military during continuation war (and right after the war). In total 191 soldiers received the honour.

Oh no, all of my grandparents are long gone. And the last ones of their generation are around hundred years old.

But they sure were adaptable bunch. My grandfather got to experience how the country went from subsistence farming based society without machinery (that any people in last 1000 years could recognize) under Imperial Russia, to our current global system with smartphones and the internet. He was born on same year WWI started, was old enough to observe the Finnish civil war and young enough to serve in WWII. Then they had to rebuilt the country.

That's a lot for a single lifetime.

Wonder how the Germans involved here will share informations, now that Mrs. Merkel managed to water down the 5G security issues to a point of making excluding Huawei a bureaucratical nightmare. Over the Huawei "we signed (trust us) that we will not spy on you" network???

Navy’s new £3bn aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales stranded for six months after second flood blows electrics. Internal flood on HMS Prince of Wales caused serious damage to HV electrical system. Missed sailing in Autumn and stranded in Portsmouth under repair until at least Spring 2021.

This has just come in as breaking news …

After walking away from both manufacturers over contractual disagreements earlier this fall, Germany yesterday requested a "foreign military sale" of Sikorsky CH-53K or Boeing CH-47F transport helicopters from the United States. Strangely enough, the German Ministry of Defence has asked to be sent the necessary documents within six work days. German media sources believe the ministry favours the "King Stallion". /edit

Funnily enough, Airbus is making a last-ditch effort to get a piece of the pie and suggests that Germany should halve her order and make it one half H225M's. The sad part is, the H225M actually seems to be a good helicopter. It'd be the helicopter which the NH90 should've been ten or fifteen years ago, and into which it's only matured recently.

France to build a new nuclear aircraft carrier

Would have been nice if other European countries would contribute too. The French are the only ones in the rest EU which can do it, so let it be built by France but add another 2 or 3 (just dreaming:)). But in reality we are governed by Angela Merkel the walking Hosenanzug. She can only spend 180 billion € on hasty Corona measures in 9 months.

Interesting how the national approaches to carrier building differ. One would think there's not a lot of room for creativity.

Speaking of carriers, the British MoD has told parliament that the country's purchase of F-35 Lightning II stealth aircraft for its air force and navy is still a "moving target" subject to changes in doctrine. Britain intends to purchase up to 138 aircraft of the type, but Air Marshal Knighton, deputy chief of the defense staff, has informed the lawmakers that the actual number could be lower. (Source, English)

Britain's defence secretary Ben Wallace has told virtual audiences at a Royal United Services Institute event to expect substantial cuts to the armed forces' capability portfolio. Whilst the Royal Navy can look forward to a significant increase in spending, Wallace said that the jury was still out on which feathers the Army would have to shed, speaking of "tough choices" lying ahead.

"But those choices will allow us to invest […] Sometimes it will mean quality over quantity or the good rather than the perfect. Or simply letting go of some capabilities. Too often we cling to sentimentality when we need to explore alternatives," he said. Wallace did, however, promise that Britain would not abandon the use of armour and announced an imminent decision for an upgrade to the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. (Source, English)

The article also mentions how badly pressed for money the RN is; and obviously I am aware of the fact that the United Kingdom is an island nation … but given everything that's been reported on the British Army, isn't it the place to which Boris' £16 billion should've rather gone? At least parts of it? I can't deny my impression that that spending increase symbolises a "cling[ing] to sentimentality".

If our lousy politicians were serious about European defence integration we could have an arrangement by which France operates the carriers and Germany provides several of its naval squadrons. So basically French carriers with one or more German air wings. Naturally Germany would need a plane operable from carriers, perhaps a navalised Tornado?. A man may dream...

I’d love to know what capability we have that can go, after 20 years of cuts.

The only major money saver would be manpower, but basic infantry don’t cost oodles, and really they are training grounds for the top line infantry units, paras etc.

On the money issue, I see it as an easy way to support industry, navy etc always has more plans than the money, so it’s a quick win.

In other words it’s a part of COVID recovery.
