This is quite interesting to me: (

German leftist icon Gregor Gysi, a popular politician and hitherto pro-Russian former civil rights lawyer from East Germany, has sharply attacked his party in an open letter after 'The Left' had accused NATO of being "substantially responsible" for the War in Ukraine and voted against a bi-partisan resolution against Russia in parliament. Gysi, usually a staunch critic of NATO, undertook an about-face as dramatic as Germany's government had last week when it announced it would triple defence spending in 2022 and ship weapons into an active war zone for the first time.
Addressing his fellow parliamentarians directly, Gysi accused them of being "completely indifferent to this war of aggression, the dead, the injuries and the human suffering". Millions of people, he wrote, were deeply moved and hundreds of thousands took to the streets to protest against the injustice. "You, on the other hand, only care about protecting your outdated ideology in every way: NATO is evil, America is evil, the German government is evil, and that's the end of it as far as you're concerned". Like them, Gysi insisted, he also cared "deeply" about international law and was also a critic of NATO.
In this case, however, the alliance "made not a single mistake" and "did nothing to justify this war".
"Do we not have to reflect on ourselves and perceive [February 24] as a turning point", Gysi mused, obviously a rhetorical question as he went on to say: "Putin has invalidated our position against an eastward expansion of Nato – which is something you lot fail to recognise – insofar as he would not have attacked Ukraine if it had been a member of Nato". Gysi, who'd encouraged 'The Left' to carry the resolution, said that in response, he would have to "reconsider my role in this party". "I'm absolutely appalled by your statement and wanted to let you know that", the letter ended.
– Hell has just frozen over. We're in the year 2022, in the most polarised state the West has been in many decades, and someone allowed facts to sway his opinion. A fierce socialist, no less, who once lobbied to have NATO secretary-general Javier Solana arrested for war crimes! This is a huge deal for Germany's left, as Gysi is immensely popular around here. He's an icon. For reference, Gysi is like Germany's Bernie Sanders. I'm posivitely surprised. Usually I strongly disagree with Gysi's politics, but I can absolutely see why so many people respect and even admire him.
