That's called Kabuki theatre to allow Russian forces a tactical pause to refit, rearm, reorg, and revise TTPs.
And to allow their professional officers in contact 5 minutes sleep before having to get back to beating all their conscript monkeys by their lonesome selves.
That must absolutely suck to not have any professional NCOs to advise, enforce, and execute your orders.
Preservation of The Russian state. Everything else is a distant 2nd.
i.e.: it can turn out to be an existential crisis for Matushka Rossiya if things aren't kept in check at the get go.
Given this backdrop, how does it matter if the adversarial force is democratic or the purest of virgins ?
Russia is making constant references to the Iraq War, as though that would give Moscow a right to break international law. Yes, that is a problem. Whataboutisms are effective because the dickheads who use them find them appropriate and cannot ever be reasoned with. Heck, historically speaking Moscow actually invented the whataboutism way back when Washington had accused the Bolsheviks of mass murder, and they responded by pointing to Tulsa.
When the world's largest single-market area not only blocks your bank accounts but also tells you to otherwise "Go fark yourself", you should should know you did something completely wrong.
I think one of the reasons that Ukraine is winning the propaganda war, is that Putin wants to keep Russia in the dark about what's happening. It also appears that Russian forces have been trying to do company sized "Thunder Runs" and getting smoked. They are then outrunning their logistics train, leaving them unprotected and then they are getting smoked.
Yep. And then there's the image of a young, charismatic Ukrainian president putting his life at risk in the mud while Putin sits fuming in some far away bunker and hasn't been seen walking amongst his people for months.
