When we were building MRAPs and Strykers with .50cal for Afghanistan & Iraq, Russia & China were preparing for peer to peer combat.

How come no one noticed in 20 years?
And where did the rest of the budget go? ;)

Russia is refusing incoming VDOC inspections due to Covid. Apperently. Very sad

Considering how "The West" has been acting all hysterically regarding COVID (and how cases have gone, and still are to this day, through the roof)...

I mean... can't blame Russia from passing on that one for COVID reasons.

This is just a wishful thinking. Do you think people in Ukraine want "liberating" from their current facist regime?

You may remember one european country that just in 6 years (33-39) became the most cruel and inhuman regimes in the worlds history. All they needed was a massive nationalist propaganda campaing. And it was even before invention of a TV.
Of course it is an absurd comparison as modern Ukrainians lack a lot of qualities in comparison, but humans can still be fed with propaganda without any limits.
Every time a Russian (or someone from let's say Australia who agrees with everything that Russia does and defends them no matter what, but is definitely not Russian) brings up the nazis it's like people like Lenin, Stalin and Beria never existed along with their entire murderous regime. Always saying how evil the nazis were while ignoring the systematic crimes against humanity committed by communist Russia or even glorifying it.

People from nations who set up gulags 15 years before the nazis set up concentration camps don't hold the moral high ground over them.
NATO holds massive advantages over Russia in many categories, but it is not coincidental that it is Russia's advantages that are most relevant at this particular moment in time, so I do not think that this will end without some major concession on the part of the Western alliance. The question is will there be a gentle off-ramp in order to keep the situation from escalating? I would hope that Ukraine is not used to fuel a proxy conflict as that would be both immoral and risky beyond measure.

Russia has taken careful steps over the past few years to prepare for this moment and has chosen its timing carefully. His internal opposition has been squashed, many foreign journalists have been forced out and Russia can now disconnect from the net at a moments notice, hence framing the narrative and the course of the conflict much more easily . Putin can move expeditiously without the same concerns for public opinion as Western leaders. Then there is the natural gas card, teetering financial markets, China, Covid, infighting amongst Western political parties, etc, etc.

Of course, this is all in the short term. The long game is another matter entirely. Regardless of all of the stated advantages this is still a risky venture. As strong a leader as Putin is, he does not rule in a vacuum. Is there pressure on him to act now?

And contrast this with the Biden's approach on things:

Deploying 5k US troops to face and deter 100k+ Russian troops will not work.
I will only lead to a possible escalation against a nuclear super power and unavoidable mission creep.

All the while Biden is a CiC who can barely articulate a comprehensive and sensical sentence.

Europe does not really want military action to take place.
Biden is.

I hate to say it, but Putin is holding most of the cards. He literally needs to do nothing now. He holds Germany by the short hairs, especially with Biden's support of the Nord Stream. This will create friction within NATO. Biden and team are incompetent, illegitimate fools. It's a complete Charlie Foxtrot of poor leadership and mistakes.

Remember how WW1 started.

The one power move that Biden has left is massively upping the ante: To deploy troops to Ukraine's border with Russia and Belarus and make it clear that any harm dealt to US troops whether it's by Russian forces or by polite people will be regarded as a declaration of war from Russia. Whether one US soldier is posted to the border or 100,000 is in that case irrelevant as the message it conveys is the same. Putin doesn't respect kind words, he respects power. Anything less won't make him back down and will mean either huge concessions by the Ukrainians or war and will set the stage for these actions to be repeated.

Normally this would be out of the question both legally and politically, but what does Biden have to lose? His popularity is already low and still going down. Plenty of lawmakers in both parties are willing to go, to say nothing of the special interest groups like establishment critters, defence contractors, lobbyists etc. He already knows that the party is going to be decimated in November. The only thing that might save him is a decisive win on the global stage over either Russia or China. Going all-in is the only option left unless he wants to concede defeat already barely into the second year of his presidency.

On a side note, just to make things clear for some, the US raised the alert state of 8500 troops that mainly support the NATO Response Force. Any decision to deploy/move the NRF is made by NATO.

Any idea if those 8500 troops would move their equipment from the states to Europe or do they have vehicles + other heavy equipment waiting them in Europe.
I suspect a lot of these troops will be the same as those that went into Afghanistan. 82nd ABN ready brigade, MEU and SOF. I also think they will perform the same job if needed, to evacuate western citizens from Kiev and some other places in western Ukraine.

And where did the rest of the budget go?
Yeah that's the funny thing whenever Russians or Chinese people brag about their latest missile or slightly updated T-72, they conveniently assume that the US and other NATO members stopped developing and fielding new technology in 1989.

In regards to the weather: Last month a severe cold front was predicted for the first few weeks of February, but it's now looking like it will be warmer than usual for this time of year.

Have you read about Dutch colony in western Australia before captain Cook?

The last person has eaten and that was the end of the colony.
So like during the Holodomir, when Russia tried to depopulate Ukraine by trying to starve everyone to death, showing just how much the Russians consider Ukrainians as their brothers.

Before eating the colonists raped each other, they were woke already.

Liz Truss couldn't find the balls on Former Poland's foreign minister sikorskiradek to kick.
Pols without the balls is the latest meme (Y)
Well, Sikorski is married to the top US journalist and they have two children. He would not have produced them without having balls.
Unlike monsieur Putain, I don’t think Sikorski would lower his status by fvcking a cleaner. It looks like he likes women from a different league:

There is a communication/PR detail from Blinken that has been bothering me...

State Department ordered families of US embassy personnel in Ukraine to pack up and leave as soon as Monday.
Such order would imply there are intel reports about active threats to Kiev that would require family to leave. Yet none was released.
It would also imply civilians in Kiev are, generally speaking, potentially at risk of these threats, no matter the nationality.

Order which was then followed by a "travel advisory lvl 4" enjoining people "not to travel to Ukraine due to increased threats of Russian military action and COVID 19" (loved that they added "and COVID 19" be sure to wear a mask folks!).
Yet, no civilians in the area received and/or were communicated anything warning them for their safety.

And finally, when asked by a Ukrainian reporter if the US had information that Russia was targeting Kiev, noting it is far away from the border, but the US ordered the departure of US embassy family members, Price, the State Department Spokesperson said he "could not comment on specific intel".

Which creates at least two things.
First, it begs several questions:
-there is a threat to civilians in Kiev. What is it?
-there is a threat to US citizens in Kiev. What is it? And why US citizens in particular?
-there is a threat that warrants the evacuation of Embassy personnel's families. Which makes the threat very specific. What is that very specific threat?
-are US citizens living/working in Ukraine also at risk?
-are civilians, in general, at risk?
-what are these risks?

Second, is it me or is there a kind of Afghanistan "withdrawal" déjà-vu when it comes to the way Blinken, Price and cie are handling this?
Communication/PR wise it seems very reminiscent.

Didn't I advice you to collect and sell that firewood instead of burning it during warm months?

That will accomplish the tearing down of the Schwarzwald down faster than expected. They won't have time to enjoy increased acid rain on the forest since having turned off more of those darn power reactors just the other day.

BTW: I hope those generals who were ready to take the suitcase away from Orange Man Bad are just as ready to take it away from Joe Dementia.
