It is certainly not up to Macron or any other to suggest territory concessions without the approval of Ukraine. And given Zelensky' s message on May 8th, he mentions Crimea in territories he wants back and so does the head of Ukrainian intelligence.
I don' t like this talk about humiliating Russia or something. A war has objectives, when you get them, then basically you won. What will Ukraine do when reaching back her borders? Should it be pursued into Russia to completely knock out Russian armed forces?
It is totally legit for the Ukrainians to not give a sh!t about how Russians feel or the political future of Russia. It is legit for western leaders to refrain from proposing concessions Ukraine does not want to give. It is also legit for western leaders to see with Zelensky what he considers as his objectives and also in full confidentiality provide the limits of the military and financial support: Donbass sure, Donbass+Crimea Okaaay, Donbass+Crimea+Rostov+Belgorod No
EDIT: I do not believe a DMZ is an achievable objective. I may be wrong but a DMZ inside Russian territory seems totally impossible.
Russia was invited to negotiate several times, and didnt really partake.
Until Russia asks for negotiations, and even then, no ceasefire should be agreed. Russia can withdraw the 20km or so back within a few hours, if it chooses.
As for Ukr pushing into russia, at the moment yes, it would apply pressure to Russia to withdraw in the Ukranianian areas it still holds. Ukraine could even make that clear, that it will withdraw rapidly, the moment Russia withdraws.
Honestly I dont think anyone can predict what will happen in Russia. And as to any suggestion Ukr or the west should care about Putin, give it up. Also Putin is going to go/fall at some point, this is the problem with 'one party/person rulers'. I also think this is reflected, at the beginning there were calls for him to go, now not so much, from western leaders. The west has actively deposed leaders in the past, it hasnt really gone well. Anything inside Russia is not our business, only the Russians can sort out Russia.
If Putin goes, then at that point(after withdrawal from Ukr and a peace deal and reparations/gas deal) then the west should give pointers to good behaviour, so free election, gets you 20% of gas back into EU, etc.
