On August 30, 1974, the Valiant military- industrial complex (commander: Captain 2nd rank I.P. Vinnik) participated in the exercises of the ships of the Black Sea Fleet, including anti-aircraft missile firing in conditions of radar interference .
The weather in the sea was fresh: wind 10-12 m / s, excitement 3-4 points.
At 9:58, the ship spontaneously started a mid-flight engine of one anti-aircraft guided missile of the aft installation, which led to the ignition and explosion of 15 V-601 missiles in the ammunition cellar No. 8.
The destroyer "Conscious" , the destroyer "Bedovy" , the BPC "Komsomolets of Ukraine" , the rescue ship "Beshtau", and a number of other ships from which the emergency ship landed on the "Brave" one came to the aid of the emergency ship .
At 10:54, the destroyer “Conscious” began towing the “Brave” to a shallow place in the region of Chersonesos .
However, as a result of the ongoing fire, at 14:47 aerial bombs exploded in the ammunition cellar No. 10 and tanks with aviation kerosene, after which the ship lost stability and sank.
From the time of the fire to the flooding of the ship took 5 hours 47 minutes. As a result of internal explosions and the resulting holes, the Otvazhniy BOD took about 3,600 tons of water, 6 impermeable compartments were flooded.
After the flooding of the four compartments in the aft, the roll and trim stabilized and the ship had positive stability. However, when the water filled two more compartments, the buoyancy reserve was exhausted and the “Valiant” sank, showing high survivability.
According to the specification, the ships of this project should maintain buoyancy and positive stability after flooding only three adjacent sections of the hull.
Of the 266 people in the crash, 24 people died - 19 crew members and five cadets of the Higher Naval School on board.
