The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945)

February 19, 1945 marks the starting of the The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) which was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II.

About 760 miles, four hours flying time, to Tokyo. Japan fortified Iwo Jima with miles of underground tunnels, caves, pill boxes and over 21,000 troops. The United States wanted the island for use as air base to launch fighter plans and to serve as an emergency landing strip for damaged bombers returned from their bombing run on Japan.

Iwo Jima was defended by roughly 21,000 Japanese army and navy troops, almost all of them were killed. Around 200 were captured. The battle caused more than 26,000 American casualties, including around 6,800 dead.
