Photo #751: Reitz and Smuts

An amazing photo showing general Smuts (standing in the middle) and Deneys Reitz (kneeling on the left) in one group. (Unfortunately the definition/resolution is not superb).

This photo was most certainly snapped during a daring raid to the Cape Colony led by Bittereinder Jan Smuts.

Deneys became well known for his masterpiece book: "Commando". This book is arguably the ultimate recording of a young Boer combatant who experienced the major conflicts including the harsh guerrilla phase, right up to the end.

It is also believed that "Commando" was a favorite of Winston Churchill.

This remarkable photo was obtained from the Reitz family, many thanks to Michael Reitz.
