Some of them, with the help of the local resistance, hid for 5 weeks in the swamp area of the 'Kampina' between Boxtel and Oisterwijk after they were accidentally dropped too early during the start of Operation Marketgarden and missed their landing zone. Initially, it concerned ± 30 Americans only, but later a group of British Para's also joined the group in hiding in the woods. They were provided with food and provisions by the local population.
On October 23, the first Allied ground troops were reported and the Germans left nearby Boxtel. On October 24, the American and British Airbornes left the 'Kampina' in the evening and entered the village accompanied by the local resistance. They were welcomed as heroes. The next day, Scots from the 51st (Highland) Division 'liberated' Boxtel again.
