The locomotive brigade of the armored train, heroically fighting the German hordes on the outskirts of Leningrad, consisting (from right to left): machinist M. Smushko, assistant machinist A. Nikiforov and fireman I. Lebedev. The brigade has repeatedly withdrawn its armored train from the enemy bombing. Photographer: TASS special correspondent V. Tarasevich.

"The crew of a Baltic armored train is often subjected to severe trials. At these minutes, much depends on the driver, his quick wit, dexterity, experience, composure and courage. The chief driver of the armored train Mikhail Smushko is the favorite of the whole team. In the most difficult conditions, he acts confidently and calmly, attention to the enemy bombs tearing at the roadbed, to the shrapnel and machine guns drumming on the armor. " (From the publication "Armored train of the Baltic sailors", newspaper "Pravda" No. 320 (8728) of 11/18/1941)

October 21, 1941. Russian civilians, trying to salvage some belongings from their burning village, located near the suburbs of Leningrad. The German captions read that the village had been set ablaze by retreating Soviet troops as part of their "scorched earth" tactics. Hard to tell what really happened though.
