Chief Lieutenant, Knight's Cross, Georg Schentke of the JG 3 "Udet" fighter squadron, examines the Soviet Il-2 attack aircraft shot down by him (his 69th victory). Stalingrad area. September 1942.
German sappers under cover of the Sturmgeshutz self-propelled gun (StuG III) are heading for the Soviet positions in Stalingrad. In the background, one can see the tram contact network supports and the characteristic (still preserved) fence of the STZ (VGTZ) behind which the factory buildings that survived the bombing and shelling are visible. The attack is being conducted from the right bank of the Wet Mosque - the Evening Mechanical Institute.
