Yes, it seems "Native Americans" or "Indian Americans" isn't the correct term anymore.
In itself, the term may/might be fine in the sense it makes things clear as to who it is referring to.
But at the same time it conveys a weird sub-sense to it, something that hints toward the "noble-savage" concept.
Which is extremely disrespectful and condescending. But put within the context of what Pete is saying... it fits pretty well: "these poor folks are just too dumb to cross the road".
