he rather interesting background of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been the subject of increasing attention lately. Westerners are culturally very impressed by the character of the brave little man standing up to the fearsome tyrant, who is practically re-enacting Charlie Chaplin's 'The Dictator' in the real world.
But there is one more thing to note about his personality: Zelensky, who is being vilified by Putin, is Jewish. He is the grandson of Holocaust survivors. Being one myself, I have some idea what that means. I learned from my grandparents from a very early age that in certain situations there is no alternative to courage. And it is not a question of glory or honour, but simply of survival.
The Holocaust taught them that there are enemies with whom you cannot compromise even if you want to. If you give in, they demand more; if you retreat, they chase you; if you hide, they seek you out. If they make you a promise, they laugh at the first opportunity to break it. For them, the only satisfactory solution is your destruction. Don't try to understand why; a cancerous tumour or a coronavirus won't explain itself to you. Your only chance of survival is to resist with all your might. Even if you are much weaker. Trust your one percent!
Both my grandparents were deported. My grandfather escaped from the labor service and was captured by the Russians. He escaped from them too. My grandmother shouted at an Arrow Cross man when he tried to drag her from the procession and shoot her. They both said that if they hadn't dared to do it there and then, they would have been dead.
I am quite sure that Zelensky is not posturing or being a hero. He simply thinks you can't be a coward against Putin because he will crush you. Moreover, he seems to be well calculated. By awakening the conscience and the forgotten heroic romanticism in the West, he has greatly increased Ukraine's chances of survival, and his own. Of course, it is still not much, but it is more than zero.
For Holocaust survivors, it was enough.

In other news, the KA-SAT network of communications satellites has been offline since 24 February. The operator attributes the outage to a cyber attack that ocurred in the early phase of the invasion of Ukraine. KA-SAT provides high-speed satellite-based internet access for central Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a subsidiary of the US-based company Viasat that also offers encrypted communication for the US military.

As a result there have been internet outages in the Ukraine, Czechia and Germany among other European nations. "Der Spiegel" reports, that as a sort of collateral damage, the major result in Germany is the absence of the remote monitoring capability for thousands of wind energy turbines. While the individual turbines continue to produce electric power and will shut down automatically in case of failures, the integrated remote control function via satellite link communication is currently not available.
Grouped for convenience.

RIP. So, was he the infamous Ghost?
We know that the Ghost is a BS.

However, this guy was not a BS. He really existed and worked in Poland. He decided to return to Ukraine and fight the Russians. He sacrificed his life and blew up a bridge.

Of course the ghost is propaganda and a necessary legend to keep morale up. However, that real pilot's fate could easily be used for counter-propaganda by the Russian disinformation machine.

I have read about rumours that Russians are "establishing humanitarian" corridors from Mariupol and Kiev. Anyone know the truth to that?

If true, Russia might follow the US strategy applied in the GWOT - ask civilians to leave and then counter whatever still shoots with heavy armor / CAS. Which would not bode well for the infrastructure of the cities in question.

Wagner neo-nazis fighting Azov neo-nazis.

Let the trash sorts itself.
I wish it could happen. However, Azov is deployed in Mariupol or nearby, while Wagner is deployed near Kyiv. They are hundreds of kilometres apart. Apart from that, Azov is surrounded or about to be surrounded, as Mariupol is under siege. Unless you airlift Wagner to Mariupol, they won't get a chance to fight each other.

Building was, apparently, not a "civilian building" (in the sense that, though a civilian building, it wasn't used fir civilian matters) meeting point for Azov Battalion.

It seems the administration building was militarized, the headquarters of the Ukrainian forces in Kharkov region was set up there, in addition to the headquarters of the local Azov battalion.

Here's azov calling on people to join up "in the square in front of the administration building":

Important detail: the Azov recruiting station was to open up at 10 in the morning, the square was hit at 8 in the morning. It was a warning, not a "massacre".

First death toll currently at 11 and 40 injured, according to unofficial count.

Ukrainian authorities later walked with under 10 injured and no deaths so far.

Nope. However, the above is completely out of context wrt. to my response, which stands unchallenged.
Out of context? It's not "out of context" at all. Why would you say that? Did you maybe fail to see through the analogy? Yes, America did violate international law when it invaded Iraq (and was roundly condemned by many Western nations which now do condemn Russia's attack on Ukraine, by the way). But if you suggest there's not an iota of moral difference between the one and the other, you're basically saying that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is evil as Saddam Hussein and that it makes no difference whether a democratic government or a dictatorship is ousted.

But it bloody well does make a difference.
Now, compare that with Every Single One of the western leaders.
Putin is about rules, rules of law - starting with UN.
There may be a bit of a language barrier here. Do you mean to say that all Vladimir Putin cares about is that international law be upheld? If that is so, he shouldn't have invaded Ukraine regardless of how many countries were invaded by America. The one doesn't justify the other.
How much of US action is legal in that regard ?
See, this is part of the problem with the Russian rationale. They only ever see the USA. Evidently, Putin can't even imagine that foreign nations could oppose Russia without being under American influence. You might remember that back in 2003, Russia, France and Germany strongly opposed the Iraq War in a joint effort. Does it mean nothing to you that as of today, France and Germany belong to Russia's staunchest critics?
Ongoing UA action - how many times did Putin point out how Minsk Agreement has been left hanging ? No one gave a sh.t !
Nevermind one can hardly blame Ukraine for not wanting to be coerced into accepting the Minsk Protocol by a foreign power that'd annexed parts of Ukraine … you know who else gave a S**t about Minsk? Vladimir Putin. He said as much when he gave his reasons for invading Ukraine. This was never about the Minsk Protocol or about NATO. This was always about Putin's Neotsarism. He's wanted to seize Ukraine all along.

As for now, the Russians use cluster ammunition against both Ukrainian soldiers and civilians in Kharkiv, so they don't really bother.
Monsieur Putain started off being extra cautious, really believing Ukrainians would love him and his troops. After a few days, he stopped giving a sh1t and started behaving like the Russians behaved in Chechnya. It's still not that level, but it's just the beginning. as the Russians are low on ammo and wait for supplies.

Our support for Ukraine is broad in nature. We provide humanitarian aid, accept refugees and deliver equipment. For security reasons, however, we cannot disclose all details to the public. The security of Poland is paramount.

Have Putin and Zelinsky meet and reach an agreement:
-Establish cease-fire.
-Gather Wagner.
-Gather Azov.
-Have them board a plane and send them in some football stadium.
-Have them kill each other.

Last man standing wins, or get a mercy kill. Whatever, I have thought the whole thing through.
