In the 1990s, Russia was almost bankrupt and paid her debts to South Korea with tanks and helicopters. But payment in money is always acceptable. Tanks aren't. Yes, Russia has other goods to trade in, but why would e.g. China accept deliveries of, say, rare earths as payment if they have enough of that crap of their own? There's a reason why modern economies pay in money, not in kind. And there's a reason why Mr. Putin responded to Western sanctions as drastically as he did. Russia cannot possibly maintain her economy and standard of living without access to international banking hubs.
