Comment: Zelenskyi could apologize, because now he has to play for time
Zelenskyi has nothing to apologize for, but sometimes it is wise to evade.
Now that a day has passed since the historic verbal spat at the White House and emotions have cooled down a bit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi could pick up the phone and call Donald Trump, who is currently spending the weekend at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
He could apologize. Acknowledge that there are differences, but explain that the whole thing was partly based on misunderstandings. Invoke a language problem. Or whatever. And continue to rub in the mineral deal.
He could even keep his fingers crossed as a sign that he is not serious about his apology. But that would be a good thing to do.
Zelenskyi would have little to lose in his apology but a lot to gain.
Yes, the rift was Trump's fault. He behaved outrageously towards Zelensky, and he is simply wrong.
Zelensky has nothing to apologize for. But sometimes it is wise to bow.
That is because it is important to play for time.
The cold fact is, as Zelensky himself admits, that without the United States, Ukraine is in trouble.
No one but Trump has the military, technical and economic capabilities needed to oppose Russia. At least not yet. Therefore, Zelensky would do well to humble himself so that the support can continue for as long as possible.
Trump is like a mafia boss who does not listen to objections. Therefore, he must be approached smartly and creatively, even if it means gritting his teeth.
Practically every Western leader who has visited Trump recently has returned with a brown tongue for this very reason.
Now is the time to swallow your pride and acknowledge the facts.
This would give Europe time to make the necessary decisions so that it can perhaps one day take the place of the United States.
Donald Trump's perception of the peace process in Ukraine is distorted. He wants credit for it and imagines that he can do it however he wants.
It would also be wise for Zelensky to play for time because there is a good chance that Trump and Vladimir Putin will still cross swords.
It is likely that Trump does not realize that Putin has no intention of giving up on Ukraine.
Russia has not signaled anything of the sort, but has insisted that, on the contrary, it is demanding more territory and concessions.
Trump, for his part, has hinted, albeit vaguely, that he also expects Russia to come to his aid.
Even Trump may realize before long that Putin is the one humiliating him and is an obstacle to peace.
At that point, Zelensky should not be in arguments with Trump.
It is possible that even then Trump does not have the kind of peace that Ukraine needs to offer after all.
But that would be the problem for that time.
Zelenskyillä ei ole anteeksipyydettävää, mutta joskus viisas väistää, kirjoittaa Ilta-Sanomien ulkomaanuutisten tuottaja Jari Alenius.
