Fixed defences need covering fire, as the iraqi's found out, when their giant oil filled trench was breached in a couple of hours. With drones, himars etc, I cant see it holding. And russians built say 1000km, Ukraine needs to breach say 5km at a couple of points.

1) The first attack is rarely the one that achieves an operational breakthrough (unless you're fighting Arabs);
2) The real importance isn't how well laid out the trench line is, but how many consecutive lines in-depth there are and how well they can support one another. Historically the chances of taking the first line of trenches is considerable, maintaining momentum after that is the real key to success.
