Italy:
Armed pontoon 'Valente' anchored near Venice. It was armed with a 305 mm/46 Model 1909 naval gun installed on an old Austro-Hungarian self-propelled iron barge, captured in 1915.

The Italian Navy operated heavily armed pontoons like these, along with shallow-deaft monitors, pretty extensively along the the Adriatic coast of the Italo-Auatrian front in WWI.

Their shallow draft allowed them to navigate much further up the extensive network of lagoons along this coast than normal warships and monitors could, and allowed the Italians to bring very heavy bombardments down upon Austrian forces positioned near the coastal areas. This proved particularly important in countering the general shortage of heavy artillery within the Italian army, and weapon caliber employed ranged included 381mm, 305mm, 203mm, 190mm, 152mm, 120mm, and 76mm.

These unusual vessels played a major role in helping to curb the advance of Austro-German forces towards Venice in the aftermath of Caporetto and then aided in inflicting their subsequent defeat in the First Battle of the Piave.

Operation Ironclad was a British campaign to capture the Vichy French-controlled island Madagascar during World War II. The seizure of the island by the British was to deny Madagascar's ports to the Imperial Japanese Navy and to prevent the loss or impairment of the Allied shipping routes to India, Australia and Southeast Asia. It began with Operation Ironclad, the seizure of the port of Diego-Suarez (now Antsiranana) near the northern tip of the island, on 5 May 1942
