People have this strange idea that IDF will have to clear all - enter your favorite number of miles - of underground tunnels. No real Israeli expert (I'm talking about high-ranking ex-military people who have the actual real-life field experience on the subject) consider the tunnels as some sort of insurmountable challenge. More like a technical challenge, one out of many others. I will remind everybody, that we've been dealing with the tunnels both in Lebanon and Gaza for at least the last twenty years or so. Plenty of time for developing both doctrine and technology.

The IDF default SOP, BTW, when encountering a tunnel is simply to seal its entrance, thus making it the eternal shelter for everybody inside (there are also other means - water, smoke etc). Generally speaking, the tunnels are useful as a shelter against the air attacks, but the moment invading ground force gets to them, they quickly become a trap. Those attack tunnels we see in Hamas video are basically single-use. The only reason to actually enter and clear some of them, I can imagine, will be releasing the hostages and acquiring high-value intelligence assets (human and material).

Our biggest challenge is going to be the political pressure from US and thus lack of time for slow and methodical progress, as it should be done. That, and the upcoming siege of Al-Shifa hospital (my educated guess, where the main IDF ground effort is converging) - and this mainly out of the associated humanitarian problems and horrible optics it's going to generate.

i think the israelis has taken this into consideration ... and might start digging a deep trench dividing northern gaza from its southern counterpart.


I think 100 to 200 feet vertical trench should do the trick

I doubt they will dig a 30 meter - 60 meter vertical trench makes little sense.
