The size of the wartime force is 280,000 soldiers, with a conscript-trained reserve of almost 900,000. The Allied countries have repeatedly been amazed at the great strength of the Defense Forces, and in Finland it has not been deemed necessary to curb this admiration.
But is more than a cockade and a rifle enough for this huge reserve? The Chief of Military Economics of the Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Mikko Heiskanen, is responsible for that .
- Everyone has an assault rifle, enough cartridges for it, a field suit, some kind of helmet and rubber boots, Heiskanen enumerates in an interview with STT.
So we are far from the "Model Cajander" of the winter war, but also not close to the ideal situation. Heiskanen describes the level of equipment in the warehouse with one word, "various".
- There is not a composite helmet or the latest carrier system for everyone. Someone might get a combat belt model 62 and an assault rifle of the same year, Heiskanen describes.
As a particular concern, he cites the adequacy of ballistic, or shrapnel protection plates to be installed on the latest fighter carriers.
For the reasons mentioned above, Heiskanen considers the proposal "at least reasonable" according to which reservists who voluntarily acquire equipment suitable for the battlefield could deduct the acquisition costs in taxation. However, it has been reported that the report recorded in the government program received a very negative reception in the Ministry of Finance.
