This week, Lapland Air Wing hosted a U.S. KC-135 Stratotanker in the arctic winter conditions of Rovaniemi Air Base. The KC-135 flew air-to-air refueling training missions with Finnish F/A-18s.
During the past weeks, the cooperation between the readiness units and the local forces of the Finnish Army has been strengthened throughout the country in a series of joint exercises. The cold and challenging winter conditions have not prevented the troops and their leaders from fulfilling their demanding tasks
The Finnish Air Force’s agile combat employment concept includes the use highway strips also in winter conditions. During exercise Hanki 24, the F/A-18 Hornets operating from Tikkakoski Air Base have taken off from a strip of Highway 4 adjacent to the base.

I Survived The Finnish Army! "The Finnish Defence Forces." I Leonardo DeValen (Leonardo Licciardo-Toivola) also give a life update since it is now 2024 and I have been gone for a long time! In the finnish military, many stories are told and here I am telling my finnish army story on how I survived the cold winter. I was in the Finnish Defence Forces for a full year (347 days) and talk about what I went through and my journey of becoming a conscript priest as well as leader in the finnish army.
The Finnish Air Force operates also from Sweden in the Nordic Response 24 exercise. A detachment of four Finnish F/A-18 Hornets and less than 30 airmen arrived at Kallax Air Base in Luleå today. The aim is to deploy fighter jets to Kallax with as few personnel as possible and to conduct multi-national air operations of the exercise out of the base.
In the "Nordic Response 24" exercise, there is a large available airspace in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This enables multinational large-force air operations as part of NATO joint operations on the ground, at sea and in the air.
Air-to-air refueling has helped fighter jets to use the entire available airspace. Finnish F/A-18 Hornets have refueled e.g. from United States Air Force’s KC-135 Stratotanker, United States Marine Corps’ KC-130 Hercules, and Multinational MRTT Unit's A330 MRTT tanker aircraft.
‒ In line with the objectives of the exercise, we have supported the fighting of Army and Navy forces in Northern Norway. I believe that particularly the Army operations have significantly benefited from the air cover and simulated close air support. The available airspace is exceptionally large, so we have actively utilized the air refueling support provided by our Allies, says Lieutenant Colonel Rami Lindström, Commander of Fighter Squadron 31, Karelia Air Wing.
