The Pori brigade's traditional "Tapanin Malja" (Tapani's bowl) competition was held on Thursday 19th of September in a brisk autumn weather in Säkylä garrison.
The HQ Company fought for the championship itself, the recon company came second, and the AT company came third. In the personnel series (B series), the Anti-Tank Company took the win.
The competition route was about 10-15 km long, depending on your own orientation choices and the distribution of the patrol's grid. During the race, the patrols navigated the marked cross-roads and performed various tasks. In addition to the task tests, the competition included an obstacle course, patrol shooting, hand grenade throwing, and speed shooting.
The competition is a memorial competition for captain Tapani Kulmala. The deputy commander of the Turku Battalion's 5th jaeger company, captain Tapani Kulmala, died on February 1, 1997 in a helicopter accident in Macedonia.
On June 4, 1997, Captain Kulmala's parents donated the "Tapani Malja" to the Säkylä Garrison Sportsmen's Association and the Pori Brigade as a round prize for the demanding garrison competition, which would describe Tapani's versatile sports hobby in its own way. The marching and mission orientation competition between the patrols was planned on these grounds. The sports department of the Pori brigade was responsible for the planning and implementation of the competition this year as well.
